The Phantom Menace 3D: 6 More Posters That Focus on a Minor Character

Posted: 01/17/12 02:11 PM ET

On Feb. 10, "Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace" gets re-released in 3D. There are many things about "The Phantom Menace" not to like: Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd, the taxation of galactic trade routes. There is one thing that we all did seem to like: Darth Maul.

The only problem? Darth Maul is in "The Phantom Menace" for about ten minutes. If that. Of course, Maul's lack of screen time did not prevent Lucasfilm from putting him front and center on the new re-release posters. "Hey, remember this guy? You liked him. Come see this movie again." Maul's dominant presence on the poster is borderline false advertising.

To illustrate this, we've prepared six more re-release movie poster from some of your favorite films, and what they might look like if they were prepared for a re-release in the same manor as "The Phantom Menace."

"Platoon"

"In 1986, Oliver Stone released his groundbreaking account of the Vietnam War. This spring, Johnny Depp returns as... Lerner."

"The Thin Red Line"

"Golden Globe winner George Clooney is Capt. Charles Bosche!"

"J.D. & Thelma & Louise"

"Hey, it's Brad Pitt!"

"Saving Private Ryan"

"You loved him in 'Fast Five.' Now, relive Vin Diesel as Private First Class Adrian Caparzo!"

"Top Gun"

"Experience the magic of Tim Robbins as Merlin in 'Top Gun,' again!"

"Apocalypse Now"

"This summer, the man who brought you Indiana Jones and Han Solo is back, as Colonel Lucas!"

Marlon Brando was top-billed on all the Superman movie posters (w/ just the S logo) and he was on screen for less than 10 minutes.

Well Jar-Jar had tons more screen time than Darth Maul but do you really want him featured on the posters?

REAL screen buffs might remember a movie call "The Third Man"... Orson Welles(who received top billing) was on the screen for maybe 10 minutes(although his character is talked about throughout the movie). I doubt it would have done as well as "The Third Man" starring Joseph Cotten... ;-)

I'm telli' ya, this guy hasn't seen a movie before 1980. (Apocalypse Now was '79 so is on the border, but he's probably seen only the Redux version. I saw the 35mm version with the airstrike on Kurtz's village with the credits IN THE THEATER Mike. CONTEXT!!!!)

At least there's a semi good ending to Darth Maul's demise. In the Clone Wars series "which is official Starwars Canon" Darth Maul returns to complete the training of his brother Savage Opress(pronunced "savodge" . He hasn't appeared in this season yet, however in the season finale of the prior season it was revealed that he was alive and his brother(Savage) has set out to reunite with him with the aid of uber powerful Night Sisters. This TV series is a million times better than those forgettable prequels.

Why can't he turn it into 0 D, as in make it vanish forever? And for those few unfortunate souls who missed seeing the infamous Plinkett video review of this turkey, enjoy.

Ha, I caught Groundhog Day on tv today and just barey recognized a very young Michael Shannon. Had to check imdb to be sure it was him. It's always weird seeing well-respected actors in small, early career parts.

Honestly, having Pitt on the poster of a Thelma and Louise isn't too much of a stretch. He was pretty memorable in that movie.

A bad film like the Phantom Menace would draw people to dub Maul as a minor character. It's the only conclusion to draw from such a horribly written script.

It had a script beyond "Special effect Happen, fight scene set to special effects, then more special effects happen"?

Those were hilarious. Seriously tho, why don't the Star Wars NERDS just write blank checks to Lucas. 3D has now officially jumped the shark.

They're trying to make an association with other movies that might "SHOWCASE" a minor character for their movie

Because they only photoshopped the face.

Why, oh why would Lucas decide to turn the *worst* film of the series into 3-D? Instead of just being bored we can be bored and get a headache too. I think this is evidence that 3-D is on the verge of collapse. Promoters are rushing out whatever they can before the technology implodes like a collapsing star. Frankly, I'd rather see 'Roadhouse 3-D' than 'Phantom Menace 3-D.'

It should be obvious, but the answer to your question is money. Vast, inconceivable oceans of money.
