25 Things That Have Happened Since Meryl Streep Won Her Most Recent Oscar

Posted: 01/31/2012 3:32 pm

Poor Meryl Streep. After losing the SAG Award to Viola Davis on Sunday night, it looks less and less likely that Streep will win the Academy Award for her performance in "The Iron Lady" at the Oscars on Feb. 26.

Now, of course Streep has won the Academy Award before -- twice, actually -- but it's still somewhat shocking that she hasn't taken home the little gold man since winning for "Sophie's Choice" in 1983. 1983! How long ago is that? Here's a YouTube clip of Streep receiving the award from a very young looking Sylvester Stallone:

I'm going to repeat this all one last time for effect: Meryl Streep has not won an Oscar since the ceremony on April 11, 1983. To drive this point not just home, but right smack into your left nostril, here are 25 things that have happened since Meryl Streep last won an Academy Award.

On the day Meryl Streep won her most recent Oscar:

· Liza Minnelli, Walter Matthau, Richard Pryor and Dudley Moore were the Oscar hosts. (Matthau, Pryor and Moore have sadly passed away.)

· Michael Jackson's "Beat It" was the number one song.

· "Tootsie" was the number one movie.

· A woman had never been in space.

· The Disney Channel was a week away from launching.

· Michael Jordan was finishing up his sophomore year at North Carolina.

· John Elway was two weeks away from being the first pick in the NFL Draft.

Since Meryl Streep won her most recent Oscar:

· There have been five sitting U.S. Presidents.

· "Arthur" and "The A-Team," both less than a year old when Streep last won her most recent Oscar, were remade as nostalgia driven movies.

· "Footloose," which was released over a year after Meryl Streep won her last Oscar, was remade as a nostalgia driven movie.

· The Original "Star Wars" Trilogy has been released on home video six separate times.

· Meryl Streep has been nominated for 13 Oscars

· Meryl Streep has appeared in 35 movies.

· Meryl Streep starred in a movie with Rosanne Barr.

· Meryl Streep has won 65 acting awards that are not called "Oscar."

· Roberto Benigni won an Oscar

· The Florida Marlins were created ten years later, in 1993, and then won two world championships.

· Seventeen professional sports franchises from the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB have switched cities.

· Four different actors have played James Bond.

· Seven different actors have played The Doctor on Dr. Who.

· Stefani Angelina was conceived, born, adopted the stage name "Lady Gaga" and recorded the song "Bad Romance."

· Jesse Eisenberg, Jennifer Lawrence, Keira Knightley, Ellen Page, Abigail Breslin, Saoirse Ronan and Hailee Steinfeld were all born and, since, have each received an Oscar nomination.

· The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has handed out 680 Oscars.

· Two of Meryl Streep's co-stars -- Chris Cooper for "Adaptation" and Nicole Kidman for "The Hours" -- have won Oscars.

· Meryl Streep has lost Oscars to Shirley MacLaine, Geraldine Page, Cher, Jodie Foster, Kathy Bates, Susan Sarandon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Swank, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet and Sandra Bullock.

Her performance in The Iron Lady was very good. However, I found that Glenn Close's more distant performance of Albert Nobbs grabbed me more. Viola Davis was also terrific in The Help. Ditto Michelle Williams. Don't know about Rooney Mara (can't abide a movie like that) but my husband said she was good. This is one of those years that most of the lead actress Pscar nominees were so good that I couldn't bitch much no matter who won. But...I do think I'd prefer Glenn Close this year.

These are not the reasons she should win. Meryl Streep deserves to win because of the sheer genius she is! And how awesome she actually is in the Iron Lady, perhaps her most well earned nomination since Adaptation (and her un-earned nominations are for performances better than any other actress' work of a lifetime quite frankly) Meryl is not Peter O'Toole, she is the like of Katharine Hepburn, if not better. If this Oscar, like the ones handed to Gwyneth Paltrow, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Shirley Maclaine (especially Shirley Maclaine, for crying out loud... Terms of Endearment??? Really???) is handed over to any one else than her, the academy shall only prove their bias and ignorance of a performer's craft... yet again.

Actually, you're wrong about something. On the day that Meryl Streep, Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space was already, well, in space. That happened on 16 June, 1963, and she was piloting the USSR spacecraft Vostok 6.

Great post. We saw Iron Lady just last night and while I thought the overall film was only OK, her performance is absolutely fantastic. What an actress! She is the finest actor (of either gender) working in film today, and has been for many years.

The Academy simply wouldn't give someone a dozen Oscars. The fact that Meryl Streep has been nominated 17 times is just mind-blowing. Having 2 Oscars is amazing, just because she hasn't in fact "won" doesn't mean anything in my mind.

Meryl Streep is the best living actress, and once her time has long passed people very well may consider THE best female actor of all time.

Zounds. I also had imagined, pretended that Meryl had won more than 2 (one for best supporting..Kramer vs Kramer I think..and not the Deer Hunter?..am I wrong)..because she is so amazing. Even in the questionable films SHE does a great job. Surely her name is one of the top 3 of all times and certain of this generation. I know she truly adores Viola and Viola is fabulous, but to transform oneself into another accent, a famous person is crazy difficult. She is the consumate artist and man..do I feel OLD! :-)

She should have won for "Out of Africa" for "The Devil Wears Prada" and for the movie where she played Julia Childs (sorry, I don't remember the name at the moment.)

She will not win for "The Iron Lady."

Of course not.

Wow! That's incredible! I'm astonished to learn that Meryl has only won two Oscars for all her years of amazing work. I thought she had at least ten!

Boy, this is a mean spirited article. Isn't it bad enough that Meryl had to see Alec Baldwin without his shirt on in "It's Complicated?"

Meryl deserves to win, she gave the best performance this year, and I thank you for writing this article since many people seem to think she has like 10 oscars.

"Meryl Streep has been nominated for 13 Oscars"

In total, Ms. Streep was nominated 17 times, including her nomination for Iron Lady, and has won twice.
10:12 PM on 01/31/2012
She's been nominated 13 times since her last win.

Is there a way we can have this sent to every member of the Academy? They really need to make amends for not giving the GODESS more Oscars.....Meryl was robbed especially last year when her acting was superior to Bullocks!!!

Meryl Streep is magnificent but that doesn't assure you of winning an Oscar. Paul Newman never won one. I don't believe Glenn Close has ever won one, either. Two is pretty big time.
12:28 AM on 02/01/2012
You're right that Glenn Close hasn't won, but Paul Newman won Best Actor for "The Color of Money" (1986).
08:46 AM on 02/01/2012
I'm not sure either of those people were as prolific as Streep.
