Lady Be Good

Posted: 02/23/2012 8:29 am

Ever since my cousin Kate Middleton became a duchess, I've been more interested in my British roots. So I saw The Iron Lady. Now I know almost as much about the United Kingdom as I do about England.

If I've said it once, I've said it 18 times, Meryl Streep is brilliant as Margaret Thatcher. I said it would earn her an Oscar nomination and it did. I can't believe how unbelievably believable she was.

I don't know how she did it. Not only does she sound and act like Margaret Thatcher, Meryl also plays her across a few decades. I always knew she was good, but after watching this performance, I think she might be a witch.

Whenever someone asks me who should portray me in the movie of my life, I always say the same person -- Taylor Swift. We're practically the same person. But I'd also love to see Meryl Streep play me. She's so good with accents and physicality. Let me tell you, dancing up a flight of stairs isn't as easy as it looks.

She really is the greatest actress of our time, and this may be her best performance yet. I can't wait to see what happens on the big night!

What's not to believe, Ellen; La Streep is always phenomenal and usually the one to beat on Oscar night. Hey, I love your little dance;you got it goin girlfriend. "Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight!"

Recently, on CNN, there was a story about Texas that was quite disturbing. It seens that the Texan Sheriffs entered the home of 2 gay males, broke into their bedroom and arrested them for consentual sodomy. This is an invasion of their privacy and something should be done about it. What a same sex couples or any other couple is private and should be respected. The ancient laws conserning sexual practice should be unconstitional in this great country of ours.

I don't get this. I mean what kind of person watches to see when someone is having sex and arrests them for it. I mean that's like in the old testament when a man and a woman would be caught in the act of adultery. It always made me wonder, who wandered around to try and catch them? I mean, that's just unimaginable to think someone would peer through windows to want to catch someone in the act.

Ellen, you're wonderful. I love, love, love you. Thought your interview in Parade magazine a while ago was wonderful, I love your take on everything. You're so kind, you really are.

And if there was any guarantee the Oscar's wouldn't collapse into an Obama 2012 campaign, I might even watch.

To quote Cam from Modern Family, "Meryl Streep could play Batman and she'd be the right person for the part."

YAWN. Meryl Meryl Meryl. She's the Marcia Brady of the awards season.

Agree about Meryl, Ms. Ellen, but two things:
1-No one, not even herself, can match her role in Sophie's Choice.
2-Iron Lady spent too much time on the degenerated elderly MT, relegating the truly exciting parts of her life to flashbacks.

If she was alive, Ingrid Bergman could have given Streep a run for her money.

No question the Bergman was an astounding talent and painfully beautiful but Streep is almost a chameleon.I guess I might disagree but not too strenuously.

Well, that's what we call "modesty" and "humility", undoubtedly!

Let me guess (not having seen the movie yet): Her awesome awesomeness is so totally beyond awesomosity as to be in its own category of pure awesomnipotence.

I am not at all surprise as you should be as well that she got an nomination. Anything she plays in she get a knob from the Oscars world. And she is great. To bad others do not get the due that she does and are just as good or even better. So your predation is not a big deal since it happens all the time. Easy predation.

The Iron Lady had the same sort of wondrous Streep performance as Julie & Julia. It also had the same problem. In Julie & Julia, way too much time was spent on the life of the dweebie Julie who doesn't deserve a foot note in the story of the life of Julia Child. In The Iron Lady, too much time was spent portraying a disheveled, hallucinating (if ever she was) Thatcher when the story of her rise from middle-class to first female leader of a Western democracy was the much more interesting narrative.

Agreed, but it's Streep's perfromnce that's the issue, not the film.

Meryl is an outstanding actress; she obviously does her homework before performing any role. I haven't yet seen the movie, but certainly plan to do so.

So, one of the greatest actresses does a film about a British Prime Minister who showed brassy bellicosity in a far away military kerfuffle, which gave her some great optics, while she screwed the average British person at home as Tories always do. I am not so closed minded that I will never watch the performance of the great actress, but I shall save my money and wait for it to show up on the TeeVee.

Yeah, who wants to know anything at all about a grocer's daughter who rose through the party of the elite to become the first woman to lead a Western country by reason other than Divine Right? Celebrity Apprentice is much more interesting.
07:44 PM on 02/23/2012
and that was decades ago. We STILL haven't had a woman president in this country.

I can't respect Thatcher for rising to the top of the party of the elite. If you hang out with skunks, you end up stinking.
