I'm excited for the Oscars this year. We're gonna find out the hot color for spring on the red carpet. I hope it's celery. And we might see one of my favorite films, Bridesmaids, win an Oscar!
The moment I saw Bridesmaids I knew it would be a hit. It's so relatable. I don't care who you are -- male or female, young or old, Democrat or Republican -- we've all gotten kicked off a plane for being drunk.
They said a comedy with an all-female lead cast couldn't be successful, but they were wrong. The movie just broke the record as the most downloaded movie-on-demand ever. See? People aren't just renting it -- they're demanding it.
It's nominated for two Academy Awards this year. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are nominated for Best Screenplay, and Melissa McCarthy is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It's amazing, considering the Academy rarely recognizes comedies at all.
I don't know why comedies don't get more attention at the Oscars. There are so many great actors who have given amazing performances and have never been nominated... like Steve Martin, or Steve Carell, or Steve Guttenberg. I can't think of anyone whose name isn't Steve right now, but I'm sure there are some.
Anyway, congratulations Bridesmaids, and good luck at the Oscars!

I've gotten on a plane with a miserable hangover but never kicked off one for being drunk. of course there was that time when before landing in San Francisco a woman who was drunk grabbed me as I was coming back from the bathroom and pulled me on her lap and shoved a popper up my nose. What a landing that was!
Or my friend Steve from college who was in a crowd scene in one of the Die Hard movies. He killed in that scene... well, actually Bruce Willis did most of the killing. But still, Steve's running and screaming was stellar (or so he tells me, because I couldn't really make him out, even with the frame-by-frame approach at home).
When it came out and one of the stars was on the Ellen show, Ellen said if there's a sequel she'd like to be in it. I sure hope there is a sequel. ;-)
Many of the supporting characters weren't fleshed out very well and wound up being caricatures, which in many ways reminded of My Big Fat Greek Wedding; the difference being that I found myself carrying for that thinly-developed family (and laughing myself into hyperventilation) much more than the people that populated this movie. That might explain why that 2002 movie made 3x what this one did. Ah well, it's not bad like I said which nowadays is quite a compliment.
Melissa McCarthy's character was good in it though.
