A Host of Advice

Posted: 02/24/2012 8:47 am

Entertainment Weekly just ranked me #2 in their "Best Oscar Hosts of the Past 20 Years" poll. First of all, I'm honored. Secondly, I know what being runner-up means. If at any time Billy Crystal can't perform his official duties, I would need to take over.

Getting to host the Oscars was a dream come true. When I found out I was picked, I was a little nervous, so I looked for hosting advice from anywhere I could get it. I even read Emily Post's book on how to be a good host. That's why the year I hosted, everyone in the audience sat boy, girl, boy, girl.

There are a lot of host responsibilities you may not know about. At big events like the Oscars, sometimes celebrities have what we call "wardrobe malfunctions." Not on my watch. I'll stop at nothing to keep things decent when I'm hosting, which includes bringing extra safety pins and making sure Jennifer Lopez doesn't have to run anywhere. It's also how my hands wound up on Janet Jackson's Rolling Stone cover.

One thing winners get upset about at the Oscars is when they forget to thank someone very special to them. So before the show, I like to find all the nominees' acceptance speeches and add my name.

I've hosted the Oscars, the Emmys, and my dream is to host the Tonys one day. They're the gay couple that lives on our street. They're very particular about what dinner parties they attend.

I can't wait to see Billy Crystal host. I think he's gonna do a fantastic job. If I could tell him anything, it would be to enjoy every second, and if he finds a maroon blazer with elbow patches, I think I left it backstage. I'll be watching on Sunday!

There is nobody I would enjoy watching as Oscar host more than you, Ellen. However, since you aren't doing it, my partner and I will settle down to enjoy Billy Crystal.

Thanks for your always welcome observations on pop culture.

You are the best!

Most excellent take on the Oscars Ellen! I too am looking forward to Billy's return, but WITHOUT Mr. Williams. Billy cannot only manage, and handle all the buzz, bloopers and long winded speeches, but he has perfect timing. PERFECT. I do hope with the return of Crystal that it will bring Jack Nicholson back to the front row! That was always part of my favorite part of the show, Jack and Billy going back and forth....Can't wait.

I'd love to see Billy AND Ellen co-host the show. It would be fun to see the interactions. Both of them do a great job on these type shows.

Thanks, Ellen. I have a suggestion for the Oscars: instead of having someone "signing" for the hearing impaired, add an inset of someone doing 'stand up'. For example, when 20 people go on stage to accept an award, have a comic do his bit. You could add this feature during the commercials as well.

Most people want to find out best actor, actress, best film, best tune. Writers, documentary winners and supporting people should have their awards sent by FedEx. This will cut the Oscar time to 30 minutes, reducing the amount of caffeine tablets I have to take. OK, OK, I understand people go to be seen at the awards. Gowns are expensive, as are tux rentals. But I think you get my point.

...lol. Ellen, ask the Oscar brass to consider Crystal and you as a host-hostess duo. It would undoubtedly be great as you're the hostess with the mostess. Best!

I double that.

I am french-canadian and I watch the Oscars night until the end only when Billy or Ellen host it. Why they don't do that together once.....Ellen, can you write an original blog post just for us on the Quebec or France version of the journal, we love you so much.....

I really enjoyed it when you hosted. So nice of you to wish Billy Crystal well. Perhaps you'll be called on to host again?

I agree that Billy is the best when it comes to hosting the Oscars. He goes out of his way to make it as entertaining as possible.
