Katherine Heigl: In Defense Of Her Supposedly Dying Career

Posted: 01/29/2012 12:05 pm

What does Hollywood think of Katherine Heigl? "She's not on any lists at all," one anonymous "top talent agent" said to Vulture recently. "She's on a respirator. She's not the girl anymore." As Vulture points out, studio executives think Heigl is less bankable than such contemporary leading ladies as Emma Stone, Amanda Seyfried, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst. Except maybe they're wrong? At least you could make that argument following the surprisingly decent box-office returns for "One For the Money," a bomb-in-waiting that Lionsgate rescheduled twice before Heigl opened it to around $11.75 million this weekend. Not bad! Especially considering the unanimous negative reviews and overall apathy about the project.

Of course, there are caveats to the non-failure of "One For the Money": Lionsgate paired with Groupon to offer discount tickets for the film, something the studio did because of sagging pre-release tracking figures among Heigl's core constituency -- women age 25-to-35, who fall into the sweet spot of Groupon users. (It's also based on the beloved and popular Janet Evanovich book series about Stephanie Plum.) That said: does anyone think Seyfried, Kunis, Dunst, Johansson or Stewart could have actually done better with something as flaccid-looking as this dud? The answer you're looking for is no; none of those actresses has ever led a movie by themselves to an opening as "lofty" as nearly $12 million.

Which makes you wonder why some people in Hollywood hate Heigl. You know why the Internet hates Heigl -- she's outspoken, prickly, annoying, ridiculous and filled with crazy hubris; she also mommy blogs -- but making movies is a business that thrives on results and "what have you done lately," not making friends. In the case of Heigl, what she's done lately is take seeming direct-to-DVD dogs and turn them into something that resembles mediocrity. That's a backhanded compliment, true, but it's also kinda impressive. Can you even believe that "Killers" grossed $47 million? Or that "Life As We Know It" topped $53 million? Do you know one person who saw either of those? Do you know one person who saw "One For the Money"? Heigl has consistently performed as a leading lady. Take out "Knocked Up" -- her biggest hit and a movie that was sold on Seth Rogen's stupid face -- and her grosses since 2007 are as follows: $76.8 million ("27 Dresses"), $88.9 million ("The Ugly Truth"), $47 million ("Killers"), $53 million ("Life As We Know It"). Toss in $54 million for "New Year's Eve," a disappointment that can't be blamed on Heigl since it featured 17 other famous people, and that's a solid run. You know what you're going to get from Heigl, and in a world of dwindling stars and dwindling grosses, that steadiness is not something that should be tossed asunder.

If Heigl does have a problem, it's her eye for material. For lack of a better term, she's blind. With the exception of "27 Dresses," the run of movies Heigl has made since her "Knocked Up" breakout have been variations on bad to worse to ZOMG-AWFUL.

"It's funny, because the question we were asking ourselves last night is, 'Does she have really bad management, or just terrible taste?'" said another anonymous person to Vulture, this one a public-relations maven. "[P]art of the problem seems to that she seems to have become incredibly complacent with her choices: She's out there promoting crap, and people are not respecting that." Even if they are still paying to see it.

Still, Heigl needs to find better material. Which is maybe not what the anti-Heigl cabal of bloggers, jilted publicists and agents want. If she could open something like "One For the Money" to $12 million, imagine what she'd be able to do with a movie that's actually good and/or actually focuses on her chillier attributes. She's the bad guy, after all. Put her in a new millennium-take on "My Best Friend's Wedding" and watch the receipts pile up.

Mila Kunis would have made a sexy, watchable Stephanie Plum. The Janet Evanovich novels have a very devoted following, always land on the NY Times best sellers lists for both hardback and paperback fiction.
This movie was miscast from the start. The next one, if there is a next one, could nix the title and focus on the "Four to Score" fourth installment of the 18 plus book series.
It definitely needs recast with Olympia Dukakis as grandma Plum, a new leading man, keeping only the actor playing Ranger. Queen Latifa would have been a hoot as Lula.

I think One for the Money was a great idea. There are 17 novels in the series with a huge following. The only problem I had with the movie was her bad wig. The other actresses mostly trade on sex appeal. Good for the guys but not much in it for the other half of the world. I've seen more bare breasts than I care to in my lifetime.

I'm going to co-sign that "bad wig" analysis. I just thought I was too close to the screen, because it truly shredded my soul for the entire movie. The thing looked like a poodle on life support. Otherwise, the movie was just "okay." I'm hoping the next one is better...if there is a next one

The only thing I admire about Heigl is that she hasn't starved herself thin like every other Hollywood actress. In that respect, she's actually a good role model for young women. But in most other respects, she's a bad one. First, she chooses really bad scripts which suggests she'll do anything if the money's good. Second, she badmouthed the show and film that launched her career. It's fine if you think the writing is bad, but why do you have to say it publicly? I've quit jobs I didn't like, but I knew enough not speak I'll of them. Imagine going into a job interview and telling the hiring manager you quit your last job because you thought your boss was an idiot and the company was being run poorly. Even if it's true, the fact that you're saying it out loud will reflect poorly on you. Most people understand that you should always show appreciation for the past opportunities you've been given, even if privately you hated them. Third, smoking. Disgusting.

She' a very good actress, her characters are very believable and she can pull a movie. If some people hate her it only goes to show that in any given environment there's plenty of stupidity going around

I'd love to see her come back to Gray's Anatomy if the Big Screen doesn't want her. She was great on that and can be again.

dds71- but she has bad-mouthed the writers AND the show. how does she go back???

Katherine Heigl is the cutest, most beautiful actress and I adore her in all her work. She was great in the Halmark series---wish I were her age and she adored me --------------joe

I could name 3 of the above woman that you mention that annoy the hell out me apart from Kirsten Dunst. It seems your just having a down day on Kathrine Heigl I have thought in the past though why is a good actor going to waste in these so so movies but the movies are what they are there is no special effects or big budget here just small budget movies compared with all the rest. That make reasonable returns. its about time though for her to show how good an actor she really is as i do believe its in there somewhere.

I'll watch anything she's in due to her careless comedic actions, she's funny without knowing it. I'll see the One for the Money, missed Killers, but can't wait till it hits rental status so I can see it.

she did a good job playing Stephanie Plum in the first Evanovich movie "One For the Money." I wanted to see Sandra Bullock in the role, since in my mind, she was always 'that' girl. But I think Hiegel has some good comedic chops
07:59 AM on 02/05/2012
I, too, thought Sandra Bullock would have made a perfect 'Stephanie Plum". I was also disappointed in the actors who played the two leading men. Having read all 17 books, a person gets a visual of who these characters should look like. It's tricky making a movie out of a book with such fabulous characters, the pool of actors is limited.

Katherine Heigl Is Great In My Books, She Is Beautiful And I Really Liked Her In "ONE FOR THE MONEY", I Liked That Movie Very Much, Yes, She Is Better Than Some Other Actresses.

If you want to know what actress is useless - look no farther than Drew Barrymore. Hollyweird continually puts her in movies and loses money. Repeatedly loses money. Forbes even ran an article on how much she loses. This blond at least provides a return. All they care about is getting your money. Don't go. Most of the movies they release SUCK!

The whole thing reminds me of nothing more than middle school. It's a form of entertainment to hate people we don't know. It's sad. As for Heigl, why is it that sone of the same people laud one actor for completely ignoring Hollywood's "list" culture, while mocking Heigl for being on no lists? Anyone posting here on the list of people making movies that release nationally? Any idea how hard it is to make any movie at all?

I still can't get over how she produced Life As We Know so her name comes up, then the title of the movie AND THEN JOSH DUHAMEL's name! He was the male freakin lead and that's where she put his name? Ego. Ego. Ego. And how about her apology in Entertainment Weekly a year or so ago when she was on the cover wanting to apologize to the world? :D lol :D She was apologizing for the way she comes across so arrogant in her interviews & in real life. Well the apology didn't phase me in the least. And will someone please tell this woman that the shade of blonde she loves to have doesn't match her skin tone so she looks 10 years older than what she really is? Looking forward to her just going away! Hollywood needs humble actors, especially in this day & age.
