When high school buddies Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster handed off their flying character to DC Comics for approximately $100,000 in 1938, little did they know their alien would leap in a single bound to become America's most beloved action hero.

Kal-El, Clark Kent, the original Big Blue Boy Scout, call him whatever, Superman is celebrating 75 years of saving the world from all conceivable threats, liberals or conservatives, earthbound or otherwise. The latest Superman movie, "Man of Steel," will be released on June 14.

In honour of the Krypton local, let's look back at some of the franchise's super feats in movies and comics; heck, we'll even throw in some trivia, too. Like what does Mario Puzo, author of "The Godfather," have to do with Superman? Did you know Lois Lane was once torn between two men? And the flying man in tights once ditched the greasy hair and just decided to grow his locks, shoulder-length?

More fun and cash facts about Superman can be gleaned below in the infographic. Superman is proving once more that people will forgive your blue-red fashion colour coordination when you have a good heart, big enough to save us all.
Ryan Gosling, chew on this: A new 'Funny or Die' parody of your ultra-serious indie, 'Drive.' 'Drive Thru' isn't about a guy who moonlights as a getaway driver, but a guy who'll pick up your burger and fries for you. For a price, of course. Instead of a badass scorpion design, this guy rocks the Golden Arches logo on his silk jacket. Our favorite bit (besides the appearance of a fast food icon): That mask Gosling wore in the original film? Now even scarier. Spoilers, if you haven't seen 'Drive.'

This is news to us, but apparently there's this thing called 'Twilight'; it's a series of books (from some author that we've never heard of named Stephenie Meyer) about Bella Swan, a teenage girl caught in a love triangle with these two mysterious guys. But get this, one of the guys Jacob Black is actually a werewolf, and the other, Edward Cullen, is a vampire. Totally crazy, right? Well these 'Twilight' books must be pretty popular because they made a whole bunch of movies based on them and they've all made lots of money. We're talking hundreds of millions of dollars!

We're not sure how but these movies must have really flown under the radar. And apparently there's another one of these 'Twilight' movies out this weekend called 'Breaking Dawn.' We hopped on the Internet to learn more about it, but we were flooded with all kinds of crazy, creative art inspired by the whole thing.

On Nov. 13, 1940, Walt Disney released 'Fantasia' at the Broadway Theatre in New York City. While the film, an innovative combination of fantastical imagery and classical music, was a modest box-office performer at the time, its impact on audiences was undeniable. With countless revivals on the big screen throughout the ensuing decades, 'Fantasia' has become a beloved classic to generations of fans. Featuring such characters as the ominous Chernabog and Mickey Mouse in his iconic Sorcerer's Apprentice garb, 'Fantasia' has remained a unique artistic display for 71 years.

With the first week of November here, department stores can't get rid of their Halloween decorations fast enough to replace them with a 24/7 cornucopia of Christmas. This odd little moment of holiday commercialization actually had a profound effect on a young Tim Burton; watching the clash of Halloween and Christmas decorations inspired the director to create the world of 'Nightmare Before Christmas.'

Burton's animated fairy-tale has become a modern classic for the holiday season. To understand how big of an impact the movie has had on a generation of viewers, all you need to do is check out the scores of innovative arts and crafts made by fans of the film. You'll find everything from tattoos to shoes, and if you're a Jack Skellington fan -- you'll even find a way to bring the Pumpkin King into your wedding.
As Halloween draws closer, it's time to bust out the horror movies for a 24/7 marathon of scary cinema. If modern-day movies like 'Paranormal Activity 3' and 'The Thing' aren't your bag, though, you can go retro with a classic horror film from Hollywood's golden age: the Monsters of Universal Studios. From Frankenstein and Dracula to the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Universal has all your favorite creatures of the night, and you can get your fix with this incredible movie-inspired artwork.

Far be it from us to look down on anyone who is really excited for 'The Three Musketeers 3D,' but -- judging from the trailer -- it appears safe to assume that this is one of those "turn your brain off" movies. To wit: underwater assassins, hand-cranked fire cannons and explosions, explosions, explosions! It's been a few years since we've read Alexandre Dumas' swashbuckling adventure, but we're pretty sure it didn't feature roof-top sword-fu. What really makes this new version of 'The Three Musketeers' so laughable, though, is the fact that we've all seen this shameless smorgasbord of illogical and inaccurate action movie cliches before -- when it was a hilarious joke on 'The Simpsons' over ten years ago.

The episode in question is 'E-I-E-I-(Annoyed Grunt)' from season 11 in 1999. There isn't much reference to Zorro, Muskteers, or ninjas beyond this opening gag, but it seems to boil down the ludicrousness of Paul W.S. Anderson's French 3D fight buffet into a tight 90 seconds. If it turns out that Orlando Bloom has a rap somewhere in the movie, then the 'Simpsons' writers might have a case for a plagiarism lawsuit.

For comic book fans, next summer's 'Avengers' movie is the realization of a fantasy that didn't seem possible just a few years ago. But as the just-released trailer has shown, what used to be pure imagination is now movie reality.

With the big-screen superhero team-up set to arrive in May, it's time for the die-hard Marvel zombies to begin going nuts over the next cinematic milestone -- and now that Marvel Comics and Walt Disney Studios work together, the movie possibilities are endless. Could we see the Incredibles fighting side-by-side with Captain America and Iron Man at the local multiplex? You don't have to wait to find out what that would look like because there's a bevy of talented artists using sites like Flickr, Tumblr and DeviantArt to show off their movie-inspired artwork.

From an adamantium-laced waterfowl to a hilarious new acting job for Winnie the Pooh, check out the amazing Dinsey-Marvel mash-up art.

The Muppets: still educational after all these years. Their latest lesson: Don't be a jerk at the cineplex. Like, don't text, don't bring your banana phone (we're looking at you, Fozzie Bear) and don't bring your microwave (ahem, Swedish Chef). In a new clip for AMC Theatres, Miss Piggy loses it as her fellow Muppets indulge in bad behavior that's only slightly worse than your average humans. This promo brought to you by the letter "M" for "Manners." And by 'The Muppets,' which opens Nov. 23.

John Landis has given us werewolves, vampires and most recently grave-diggers, so he knows a thing or two about big-screen horror, which is why you should heed his latest words. While promoting his new book 'Monsters in the Movies: 100 Years of Cinematic Nightmares,' the Master of Horror has proclaimed the zombie to be the monster of the 21st century.

As he explained to the LA Times: "Zombies are a real thing. It is part of Haitian voodoo. They would drug these people and bury them alive and use them as slave labor. This is all documented. But what the zombie has become is so interesting."

"They are made from radiation or disease or military experiments.... Even when they become objects of fun, the idea of the living dead is so powerful and it represents so many things," the director went on to say, "Something they use it for all the time, which is increasingly relevant, is chaos, the collapse of society. What is more frightening than anarchy?"

Hard to argue with that logic. With the news becoming inundated with scenes of protests, starting in the hundreds and growing into thousands, the only thing left to happen before America devolves into a full-fledged undead nightmare is one toxic bite from a Sumatran Rat-Monkey.
Sure, the Fellowship couldn't last forever, but who knew it would come down to hobbit versus hobbit? Former 'Lord of the Rings' castmates Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan will throw down at this year's Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and Wood (the onetime mild-mannered Frodo) appears to be taking the match very seriously. In a video challenge to Monaghan, he shows how hard he's working out and threatens, "Where's your Pippin now, bitch?" Wood's video, and Monaghan's response, ahead.

Wood's a little scary. Be afraid, Dom!

Your likely first thought on seeing this photo of Ingmar Bergman on the set of 'Jaws' -- Photoshop! And yet that really does appear to be the legendary Swedish director examining the mouth of Bruce the shark. Since this photo comes courtesy of The Criterion Collection's Facebook page (and not, say, eBay), it seems pretty legit.

Who knew that the guy behind such cinema masterpieces as 'The Seventh Seal' was pals with the then up-and-coming Steven Spielberg? Although apparently a lot of famous filmmakers got on-board that train early: French auteur François Truffaut appeared in his next film, 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.'

Dozens of Facebook users have already come up with some great captions, including:

David Fogg: ‎"You're gonna need a bigger existential crisis"
Will Hattman: Through a Glass, Sharkly
Jim Shulman: The seventh seal was the appetizer
Scott MacKenzie: Redefines the title "Smiles of a Summer Night." (Well, Bruce was Moviefone's Smilingest Male Villain ever.)

And one conspiracy theory from Jeff Yana: "In truth, that is an Animatronics Specialist wearing a Bergman mask, the photo is a hoax, haha! Want proof, look at his lab coat."

Here's guessing that Bergman idolizer Woody Allen is crying his eyes out somewhere that the director never visited the set of 'Annie Hall.' As far as we know, anyway.

If you had a hard time keeping a straight face through 'Bridesmaids,' imagine what it was like for the cast when filming. A newly released blooper reel for the film (out on DVD/Blu-ray next week), highlights the difficulty, with Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm as stand-out offenders. Bing bong! (You'll understand that reference after watching ahead.)

Update: Universal has asked that the video be taken down from YouTube. Looks like you'll have to wait until the DVD comes out Sept. 20.

Hey kids, ready for the Oscars yet? Though the Academy Awards are a good six months away (Feb. 26, 2012), Hollywood is already gearing up for the big event. Studios are jostling around, preparing their best films for late-year Oscar-qualification runs, and PR departments are getting ready to run overtime to promote stars, directors and films for next year's campaign. Where does that leave you, the fan? Well, if you're lucky, in the bleachers on Hollywood Boulevard.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is conducting a random drawing to fill the bleachers along the red carpet with 700 lucky fans who fill out and send back an online application at www.oscars.org/bleachers.

The applications will be available Monday and must be completed and submitted by midnight ET/9PM PT on Sunday, Sept. 18. In previous years, more than 20,000 fans applied online, making your odds of getting a slot much better than winning the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.

Ready, set, go! Check out the official AMPAS announcement below.

Bloopers, goofs and continuity mistakes have always been part and parcel of moviemaking. When a scene is shot over several days, props can rearrange themselves, or articles of clothing can appear or disappear mysteriously. (Even worse: when jet airplane trails appear in medieval skies or watches are worn in 'The Ten Commandments.') Film buffs have always had fun with such gaffs, so it's no surprise that 'X-Men' fans were on the lookout during 'X-Men: First Class.' The folks at IGN put together what they call "The F'd Up Timeline of 'X-Men: First Class,'" a cool animated video explaining some of the timeline mix-ups between 'First Class' and the many other X-Men films. Watch ahead.

Herr Frankenstein would be proud. Thanks to CGI, three iconic actresses have been resurrected to appear with Charlize Theron in a Dior commercial for its J'Adore perfume. In the ad Theron, the face of the fragrance, is seen getting ready for a runway show at the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, changing into a gold gown while exchanging glances with Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe.

The ad was shot by Oscar-winning director Jean-Jacques Annaud ('Black and White in Color,' 'The Name of the Rose,' 'Seven Years in Tibet') and uses the song 'Heavy Cross' by The Gossip.

Theron, who won an Oscar for her role in 'Monster,' hasn't had a major big screen role since 2008's 'The Burning Plain,' but that will change with upcoming turns in 'Young Adult,' 'Prometheus' and 'Snow White and the Huntsman.'

It's been several years since deceased movie stars have been used in ads; the most famous being the Diet Coke ads with Elton John performing for Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Louis Armstrong. The moving images of Fred Astaire, Lucille Ball and John Wayne have also been used in commercials.

If this ad is successful -- and it sure works for us, despite the annoying soundtrack -- might there be more uses of deceased stars in ads? What do you think?

Check out the ad after the jump.

A new 'Toy Story' short finds Buzz Lightyear taking on space villain Zurg on a distant planet and ... wait, is that a forest made out of asparagus?

In this video short Buzz is real (well, a real toy) and yep, that's an asparagus fort in a "toymation video short." It starts off with a real boy playing with his new 'Toy Story: Space Mission' toys. Then, the backgrounds become a mix of animation and real objects, like those broccoli heads and artichokes, as Buzz, Rex and Woody battle Zurg and his evil dust bunnies.

Okay, so it's really a commercial for the new Mattel 'Toy Story: Space Mission' line, but it's still cute. And no Tom Hanks or Tim Allen required: One boy provided all the voices.

With the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 just days away, New York-based director and cartoonist Dan Meth decided to pay homage to the Twin Towers by compiling movie scenes in which they appear.

Just about every shot of the New York City skyline included the World Trade Center, but there were some really iconic movie scenes, most notably in the 1976 version of 'King Kong,' in which the big ape climbs one of the towers instead of the Empire State Building.

Meth's video includes scenes from 'Superman,' 'Dog Day Afternoon,' 'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,' 'The Wiz' and many more. (The video is after the jump.)

We're also including a shot he missed, from the end of 'Daylight;' Amy Brenneman and Sylvester Stallone have just survived a catastrophic tunnel cave-in and the towers seem to symbolize the indomitable nature of New Yorkers, who can weather any crisis. So here's to you, New York, New York.
Fall Movie Preview: The 30 Must-See Indies: Summer is essentially over. Maybe not by the calendar, but certainly when it comes to Hollywood. The 'Transformers 3's' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4's' have come and gone, and for anyone who likes a mediocre $200 million-budgeted film aimed at teenage boys, you're out of luck for at least a few months.
Say hello to my little friend. The classic scene in 'Scarface' where Tony Montana whips out his not-so-little gun in a violent last stand gave us one of the most famous movie lines of all time.

Now, in a preview of the special limited edition Blu-ray, out September 6, enjoy these never-before-seen outtakes of Al Pacino delivering Tony's memorable threat.

The fun isn't just in the slight differences he brings to each reading, but that -- still in character between takes -- he shouts, "You like that?" at the camera, punctuated with a few gun blasts.

What do Ryan Gosling's solitary getaway driver and moviedom's most famous mercenary have in common? Plenty.

In the trailer for 'Drive,' Gosling's unnamed wheelman delivers a speech laying out his terms: "I don't sit in while you're running it down. I don't carry a gun. I drive." Words that could easily have been spoken by a certain cynic named Han Solo. (Apart from the "I don't carry a gun" bit.)

Check out the awesome mashup of 'Drive' and 'Star Wars' after the jump.

From ComicsAlliance: Inspired by Martin Hanford's Where's Waldo books, Richard Sargent of Hopewell Studios has presented robot fans with a similarly awesome challenge: Find Pixar's WALL-E amid dozens of pop culture's most famous robots, then identify them all. The amateur robotologist who correctly identifies the largest number of 'bots by August 31 will even be awarded a print from Hopewell. You don't have to get competitive to enjoy the mechanized fruits of Sargent's labors, though. Hit the jump to take in the awesomeness that is 'Where's WALL-E?' Whether your favorite robots come from comics, movies, cartoons or gaming (or, as is the case with many awesome characters, all of the above), 'Where's WALL-E?' has a little something for everyone. Critic's Notebook | How Movies Like 'The Help' Reinforce Hollywood's Race Problem : Nobody should be surprised by the dearth of minorities in contemporary media. On the surface, it's a boring issue: Whether or not the stories of gay, black or women characters make their way into movies and television only becomes a central issue if specific industrial forces continue to keep them out. If a truly progressive society is color blind, then everyone should let the chips fall and assume equal opportunity remains in flux. The reality is a lot more complicated, as demonstrated this week by the release of the antiquated civil rights drama 'The Help.'

Harmony Santana, a transgender actress, gives a breakout lead performance in Rashaad Ernesto Green's coming-of-age scorcher 'Gun Hill Road.' Santana plays Michael, a male teenager on track to transition to a woman. When his father returns from a long stint in prison, Michael finds himself facing off against a man unable to understand his son's dilemma. The Bronx-set drama premiered at Sundance to positive notices, snagged a distribution deal with Motion Film Group and went on to open Outfest and close NewFest. The closing film screens Friday night with the Guillermo del Toro-produced 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' and the world premiere midnight screening of the fifth installment in the 'Final Destination' series. Legendary director Raoul Ruiz gave audiences the first film of his sixth decade of filmmaking with 'Mysteries of Lisbon,' which topped four other specialty openers this weekend to be the criticWIRE pick of the week. An adaptation of a famous 19th century novel by Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco, the film focuses on the child of an ill-fated romance between two aristocrats who are forbidden to marry. Many thought 'Lisbon' would be Ruiz's final film, but thankfully surgery for liver cancer saved his life. Just over a month ago the promising teaser for the anticipated spy flick 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' dropped and bode extremely good things to come. No big surprise really, given that it marks the first English language film from 'Let the Right One In' director Tomas Alfredson and boats an amazing cast that includes the likes of Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong and Ciaran Hinds. If the first preview didn't already have you all riled up, the film's fleshed out trailer that hit the web today will be sure to do the trick.

Edgar' starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Now the studio is eyeing 2012, and surprisingly, has thrown a sci-fi genre picture into Academy Award contention.
