The 31-year-old Miramax label will be retained by Disney and applied to about three movies a year going forward, according to studio officials.

The 31-year-old Miramax label will be retained by Disney and applied to about three movies a year going forward, according to studio officials.

But operated by Disney's management team in Burbank, California -- and lacking any dedicated employees of its own -- the groundbreaking indie studio founded by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein in 1979 is essentially finished.

Naming the studio after their parents, Max and Miriam Weinstein, the brothers built a powerful film brand from scratch, wheeling and dealing to get capital, bullying business partners, seducing top filmmakers and, of course, spending oodles of money on Oscar campaigns.

While the Weinsteins themselves have always been polarizing figures in Hollywood, there's no debate about the stellar quality of their library, which includes 'My Left Foot,' 'Reservoir Dogs,' 'The Piano,' 'Pulp Fiction,' 'Clerks,' 'sex, lies and videotape,' 'Shakespeare in Love,' 'Swingers,' 'Good Will Hunting' and 'The English Patient,' just to name a few films.

Countless films released by Miramax have received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and some, like 'The English Patient' in 1996, 'Shakespeare in Love' in 1998 and 'Chicago' in 2002, have even won.

"Miramax wasn't just a bad-boy clubhouse, it was a 20th century Olympus," filmmaker Kevin Smith told the Wrap. "Throw a can of Diet Coke and you hit a modern-day deity. And for one brief, shining moment, it was an age of magic and wonders."

The Weinsteins sold their company to Disney in 1993 for $70 million. And for a while, they were able to operate rather autonomously out of New York.

However, as the label aggressively sought awards attention with lavish Oscar campaigns, and its movie budgets began to escalate, the Weinsteins' relationship with then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner deteriorated.

After a bitter parting of the ways with Eisner, the Weinsteins left Miramax in 2005 to start a new production outfit (yep, the Weinstein Company), and Miramax was left in the hands of Battsek, a longtime international sales executive for Disney.

Put on a much shorter budgetary leash then the Weinsteins ever were, Battsek was able to squeeze out some well-received films, including 'The Queen' and 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.'

In fact, just two years ago, Miramax co-produced, along with Paramount Vantage, Oscar best picture-winner "No Country for Old Men."

But Miramax had already began its descent. In 2007, the company pulled in $135.3 million in domestic ticket sales. By last year, that figure had dropped over 50 percent to $65.8 million.

Terms of Webb's deal were not disclosed, but Sony, in its announcement, denied reports that the director is also signed to do two other 'Spider-Man' films, and that he's being paid $10 million a movie.

"At its core, 'Spider-Man' is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world," said Sony Co-chair Amy Pascal, in a statement. "The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure. We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey."

Jackie Chan is a spy working for China and the CIA, who falls in love with a widow with three kids. He retires to be with them, but his job follows him home. Mom goes to be with her sick dad. Evil Russians have a plot to control the world's oil supply, and this requires them to chase Jackie and the kids through shopping malls, large empty factories and so on. Jackie's character is named Bob Ho, which reminds me of someone. Truth in reviewing requires me to report that 'The Spy Next Door' is precisely what you would expect from a PG-rated Jackie Chan comedy with that plot. If that's what you're looking for, you won't be disappointed. It's not what I was looking for."
No sense blaming director Brian Levant ('Jingle All the Way') for not knowing enough to show our favorite human special effect in one, clean take -- scrambling up a wall or sliding down an escalator with a Fred Astaire grace. This dwarfs previous 3-D films, including summer releases 'G-Force' from Disney and 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' from Fox, which derived 50-60 percent of their box-office revenue from 3-D sales.

Unlike previous three-dimensional efforts, 'Avatar' -- largely due to its maker's wishes -- has been marketed as a must-see-in-3-D offering from the beginning.

In fact, it was the first major release for which the majority of screens were 3-D. Of the 3,453 theaters secured for the film at launch last month, 2,038 offered the film in the format.

In the U.S. and Canada, only 5 percent of 'Avatar''s 3,422 theater locations this weekend were premium IMAX 3-D locations. Yet, a full 16 percent (or $7.5 million) of the film's domestic revenue was derived by IMAX ticket sales.

The premium 3-D ticket prices, meanwhile, are helping the movie ascend to new box office heights.

Having taken in $1.335 billion worldwide, it's the second highest global grosser ever behind Cameron's last film, 1997's 'Titanic,' which grossed $1.8 billion before it was done.

However, it was the gritty, terrifying -- scientifically imaginative -- 'Alien' that defined the career of O'Bannon, who kept up the writing credits through three decades of sequels and spin-offs, including 2007's 'AVPR: Aliens vs. Predator -- Requiem.'
The New Yorker: "From the start, it feels handsome, steady, and stuck; the ties that bind the historical bio-pic are no looser than those which constrain a royal personage, and the frustration to which Victoria would later admit ('I had led a very unhappy life as a child -- had no scope for my very violent feelings of affection') is legible in the face of Emily Blunt, who takes the title role."

Boxoffice Magazine: "The term "heritage cinema" seems to have been invented for British films that dwell on elements of the nation's chequered history, much of which finds a ready market overseas. The 'Young Victoria' is no exception -- a beautifully mounted and costumed odyssey into the early life of the monarch. With a script by Julian Fellowes, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for Gosford Park, 'The Young Victoria' positively sizzles with impeccable pedigree."

Entertainment Weekly: "On Wikipedia, you can find the first photograph of Queen Victoria (it's from 1844), and though she looks younger and more relaxed than the famous image we're used to -- the frowning dowager in her black lace widow's kerchief -- she's a far cry from ... well, Emily Blunt. Blunt, however, is such a wily and playful actress that in 'The Young Victoria,' she makes her twinkly ivory radiance fit the role. Her beauty comes off not as the usual period eye candy but as an expression of Victoria's inner grace -- her deceptive ability to go with the flow."

The Village Voice: "Man, British heritage cinema can be dull when assembly-lined for the export market. Laboring under lampshade millinery, hair that looks like cake, and more sumptuous banqueting than we should ever have to sit through, Emily Blunt is cute, sassy, and wildly improbable as the titular Majesty-in-waiting, who, in life, was a short, dumpy policy wonk and energetic social reformer."

The New York Observer: "In the otherwise somber 'The Young Victoria,' vivacious Emily Blunt, who did so much for stiletto heels in 'The Devil Wears Prada,' puts a modern spin on the famously poised and longest-reigning monarch in British history. This is a lavish and lovingly detailed period piece that attempts to re-create England's last golden age, but the enchanting Ms. Blunt is the whole movie, and it wouldn't register even a small bleep on the Richter scale without her. She puts the Vicki in the young Victoria."

Time Out New York: "This isn't your great-great-great grandfather's highness, all unamused frowns; this Victoria is a wide-eyed Emily Blunt, cooing at her doggie and getting busy with her future husband (Rupert Friend). (Director Jean-Marc) Vallée and his lead get high marks for kittenish revisionism. In all other respects, however, this movie is indistinguishable from every other throne-and-scepter biopic to hit the screen."

Metromix: "Of course the sets are lavish. Blunt also acquits herself nicely to a withdrawn role, and for a few minutes the film makes internal politics within the palace seem interesting. Mostly 'The Young Victoria' is just an unfocused tale of royal fussiness-surrounded by a bland love story, which is then followed by a closing note about all the wonderful things Victoria went on to do. It's presented as if to say, 'By the way, here's why you should care about what you just slept through.'"

The Herald Sun (Australia): "With original casting choice Keira Knightley quite rightly having been deemed too skinny'n'chinny for the lead role, Emily Blunt takes over with surprising aplomb. Which is just as well, because the script for 'The Young Victoria' is a tad flat."

The Hollywood Reporter: "As with most mainstream comedies, you get nearly all of the story line and most of the best jokes in 'Did You Hear About the Morgans?' from its trailer. This fish-out-of-water romantic comedy about a warring upscale Manhattan couple forcibly relocated to the American heartland is marginally better than writer-director Marc Lawrence's 'Music and Lyrics' and 'Two Weeks Notice,' but not even the estimable comic chops of Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker can lift it above the level of ordinary."

The Orlando Sentinel: "Sandra Bullock hitched her career to writer and later writer-director Marc Lawrence when he scripted 'Forces of Nature.' She stayed with him through the 'Miss Congeniality' hits and up to 'Two Weeks Notice' (2002). Then Bullock weaned herself from Lawrence's brand of gimmicky, wan and witless comedies and lived to stage a comeback this year. But Bullock passed Lawrence on, like a bad penny, to Hugh Grant, her co-star in 'Two Weeks Notice.' And Grant can't seem to kick the Lawrence habit. 'Did You Hear About the Morgans?,' Grant's third film with Lawrence, may be his overdue intervention. Unfunny and tone-deaf, it pairs Grant with Sarah Jessica Parker, with whom he has no chemistry, and gives neither of them anything funny to say or play."
The movie will follow a career criminal who gets arrested in Mexico and sent to a dangerous prison. Luckily, he befriends a capable 9-year-old boy, who helps him in his quest to survive.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in March on location in both San Diego and the Mexican state of Veracruz, where Gibson's 'Apocalypto' was filmed.

Produced by Gibson's Icon Productions, the filmmaker isn't directing this particular project; rather, he is tapping virtually the entire core group behind the film 'Apocalypto' to make 'Summer Vacation.'

For example, Adrian Grunberg, who was first assistant director on 'Apocalypto,' will serve as director, and Stacy Perskie, who was second A.D., will produce.

News of this latest Gibson project comes just days after it was reported that the filmmaker had signed on to direct Leonardo DiCaprio in a Viking-themed period epic.

Gibson also has two acting gigs surfacing in theaters next year: 'Edge of Darkness,' a thriller penned by William Monahan ('The Departed'), and the Jodie Foster-directed comedy 'The Beaver.'

Understandably, anticipation for the film's U.S. premiere is huge. The movie has already premiered to solid reviews in the U.K., and entertainment trades in the States are liking what they're seeing, too. Take a look:

Variety: "The King of the World sets his sights on creating another world entirely in 'Avatar,' and it's very much a place worth visiting. The most expensive and technically ambitious film ever made, James Cameron's long-gestating epic pitting Earthly despoilers against a forest-dwelling alien race delivers unique spectacle, breathtaking sights, narrative excitement and an overarching anti-imperialist, back-to-nature theme that will play very well around the world, and yet is rather ironic coming from such a technology-driven picture. Twelve years after 'Titanic,' which still stands as the all-time B.O. champ, Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see."

Hollywood Reporter: "A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world. As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is 'Avatar.'"

Screen Daily: "Twelve years after 'Titanic,' James Cameron delivers his latest blockbuster and once again takes cinema to a new level of remarkable spectacle. An epic film born entirely of Cameron's imagination, 'Avatar' uses tailor-made technology to create the most astonishing visual effects yet seen on screen and blends them seamlessly into a mythical sci-fi story about an ancient alien civilization fighting the encroaching human menace. It's an unprecedented marriage of technology and storytelling which is on the whole remarkably successful."
The London Times: "Movie events don't get bigger than this. James Cameron's long-awaited follow-up to 'Titanic,' the most successful film to date, is immense in every way: from the ambition and scope of its vision, to the ground-breaking technological wizardry, to the staggering size of its budget."

Empire: "'Avatar' is unequivocally, completely, 100% the film that has been percolating in James Cameron's head for the last 14 years. It is not, in all probability, the film that you had in yours when you first heard that the man who directed 'Aliens' and 'The Terminator' was returning to sci-fi with a movie so ambitious that he had to build the technology to make it happen. If you can let go of your version and embrace Cameron's -- if you're not, in other words, one of those splenetic internet fanboy types who've apparently made their minds up about 'Avatar' before seeing it -- then 'Avatar' is a hugely rewarding experience: rich, soulful and exciting in the way that only comes from seeing a master artist at work."
The Guardian: "Any lingering suspicions that James Cameron has become the Al Gore of Hollywood will be firmly extinguished by his new, monstrously-hyped creation. For a while, it looked like he was giving us a reasonably sweet-natured blockbuster, suggesting that the natural world has, like, the power to heal us all, or something. Then Cameron sends in the helicopter gunships and starts blowing (stuff) up, big time. Way to undermine your own message."

The genre-spoofing indie film 'Transylmania' endured the worst opening in the history of the domestic box office over the weekend for a movie opening up in more than 1,000 theaters, according entertainment news site TheWrap. Vampire movies don't always work.
The genre-spoofing indie film 'Transylmania' endured the worst opening in the history of the domestic box office over the weekend for a movie opening up in more than 1,000 theaters, according entertainment news site TheWrap.

Distributed by Full Circle Releasing, the movie took in just $274,000 playing at 1,007 theaters. That was worse than the previous holder of the dubious mark, 1991 indie film 'Rich Girl.'

Starring Patrick Cavanaugh, who plays the regular bit role of Smitty on AMC's 'Mad Men,' 'Transylmania' is the third-part sequel to director-producer brothers Scott and David Hillenbrand's 'Dorm Daze' series.

The R-rated 'Transylmania' follows the 'Dorm Daze' crew as they venture to Romania and get into raunchy vampire adventures.

The first two movies in the franchise had been released in the U.S. primarily on DVD. However, with 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' generating record box-office returns, the Hillenbrand's -- who set up Full Circle to distribute 'Transylmania' -- thought the theater was the right place to be this time.

"We picked a release date to be three weeks after 'New Moon,' hoping that everyone will have really enjoyed the 'New Moon' experience and they'll be ready to step back and watch the first vampire comedy that's poking fun at the genre," Scott Hillenbrand told IF Magazine.

However, besides being vexed by sparse promotion and audience awareness -- not to mention a zero score on movie-review site Rotten Tomatoes -- 'Transylmania' also wasn't helped by the fact that much of its college-aged target audience is in the finals crunch right now.

That was a really tough play date they selected," one studio distribution official told TheWrap.

"I don't think you want to see 'Ordinary People' in 3-D, but 'Zombieland' is clearly one movie that will benefit from (the technique)," producer Gavin Palone told the trade.

The fact that 3-D TVs will start to roll out in en masse later next year is also influencing the decision to move to the format, Palone adds.

Sony is currently in talks with Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg to reprise their 'Zombieland' roles in a sequel. For their part, Paramount and MTV Films are further along in their efforts to produce 'Jackass 3,' with filming scheduled to begin Jan. 25.
And that buzz just may bring her an Oscar nomination come Feb. 2.

Word-of-mouth for 'Blind Side' has been exceptional, with CinemaScore -- a firm that delivers viewer feedback to studios -- giving the movie a rare "A-plus" grade.

And critical reception for the movie has been pretty good (74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), with even critics who don't like the film enjoying Bullock's portrayal of a middle-class Memphis mom who adopts a homeless African-American football prodigy. In fact, the New York Press liked it better than a movie that has emerged as an early Oscar favorite -- Lionsgate's 'Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire.'

"All Bullock's films promote an edifying sense of human experience -- she has an instinct for what people like to see -- and that gift makes 'The Blind Side' the perfect, God-sent antidote to 'Precious,'" the paper noted.

Early on, Bullock has not been a part of Warner's Oscar-season promotional plans, but that could change, with studio distribution president Dan Fellman telling entertainment news site TheWrap this weekend, "Hopefully, this movie makes the Academy's top 10 (for the best picture race), and Sandy Bullock gets a look, too."

Of course, it's not like Oscar's best actress category is wide open, with Carey Mulligan ('An Education'), Meryl Streep ('Julie & Julia'), Helen Mirren ('The Last Station') and Gabourey Sidibe ('Precious') all expected to garner serious looks from the Academy.

However, beyond those four actors, there are no clear locks for the fifth nomination. Meanwhile, there is precedence for a moderately-budgeted, studio-distributed biopic starring a strong female lead winning the top actress prize, although it's been a while.

In recent years, the category has been primarily taken by performers appearing in independent films and small studio specialty-division titles, such as Kate Winslet last year for 'The Reader' and Marion Cotillard for 'La Vie en Rose' the year before.

However, Julia Roberts won the top female acting prize in 2000 for Universal's 'Erin Brockovich,' also playing a strong, reality-based role that won over both movie-goers and critics.

As old boys clubs go, the collection of people who've either won the Oscar for best directing, or have at least been considered, is not a very inclusive group, with only three female directors getting nominated for the prize in Academy Awards history.

As Variety noted Monday, that number could increase significantly this year, with at least half a dozen movies with women directors being promoted by their respective studios for Oscar consideration.

While the trade neglected to mention any of these hopefuls specifically, nomination-worthy female directors who come immediately to mind this year include Lone Scherfig ('An Education'), Nora Ephron ('Julie and Julia'), Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker'), Jane Campion ('Bright Star') and Rebecca Miller ('The Private Lives of Pippa Lee').

Meanwhile, in a year featuring an expanded field of best-picture candidates -- and a wider consideration tent overall because of that -- directors like Anna Fletcher ('The Proposal') could also be considered as long shots.

For Oscar, having even one of the aforementioned film directors make the short list would mark an unusual year.

The last women to be nominated for the prize was Sofia Coppola (for 'Lost in Translation') back in 2003 (and she was the only American to ever be tapped for the trophy). Before that, New Zealander Campion was nominated in 1993 for 'The Piano,' while Italy's Lina Wertmuller garnered consideration back in 1976 for 'Seven Beauties.'

According to the Variety article, the number of female directors in Hollywood isn't necessarily increasing. The report cites data compiled by the Center for the Study of Women in Television, which found that only 9 percent of the top 250 grossing American films last year had female directors -- a figure that was flat with 1998.

In version 4.0, it seems that after rescuing a princess, getting married and fathering triplets, our favorite green ogre has found himself becoming a little too domesticated for his liking.

"He has lost his roar," said Mitchell, whose credits include 'Sky High' and 'Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo.' "It used to send villagers running away in terror. To fix things, Shrek makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, the Grimm-created troublemaker who also appeared in movies two and three. (According to USA Today, contrary to rampant Internet rumors, it is not Beatles legend Paul McCartney who voices Rumpelstiltskin.)

Those reprising their earlier 'Shrek' roles include Shrek himself, Mike Meyers, as well as Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona).
In the novel, McCarthy played off postapocalyptic Hollywood thrillers, and so he gave you the heady feeling that you were seeing a movie unfold on the page. Yet he brought off that feat without much action; the backdrop was grand, the emotions interior and refined. If you're going to adapt a book like Cormac McCarthy's 2006 bestseller, you're pretty much obliged to make a terrific film or it's not worth doing -- first because expectations are high, and second, because the picture needs to make it worth people's while to sit through something so grim. Except for the physical aspects of this bleak odyssey by a father and son through a post-apocalyptic landscape, this long-delayed production falls dispiritingly short on every front."

The New York Times: "The most arresting aspect of 'The Road' is just how fully the filmmakers have realized this bleak, blighted landscape of a modern society reduced to savagery. Vehicles sit abandoned on highways, houses stand looted and vacant, and what used to be towns are afterimages of violence and wreckage."

But in director John Hillcoat's adaptation of McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, there's not even a cigarette's worth. Soot-deficiency is a forgivable offense, but Hillcoat's 'The Road' is missing other things, too. Though the film mostly strives to stay close to the book, it fails to translate its essence and somehow feels more dreary than it should -- which is saying something for a story about the apocalypse.

The Boston Globe: "The Road'' has been poured straight from McCarthy's bleak bottle and brought to the screen by Australian John Hillcoat, who turned the 2005 Outback Western 'The Proposition' into an epic of blasted landscapes and bloody motivations. So said Jim Gianopulos, chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment , the studio behind the film.
So said Jim Gianopulos, chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment , the studio behind the film. Gianopulos told Reuters that an earlier report in the New York Times offering up that budget figure was "ridiculous."

According to Gianopulos, the $500 million figure "has actually no relationship to the actual cost of the movie. People keep repeating a number, which was as if you added the cost of building the studio 80 years ago to the cost of 'Avatar.'"

Regardless of whether or not the figure is even remotely accurate, there is always keen interest when Cameron makes an expensive movie. After all, in November 1997, with the premiere of 'Titanic' just weeks away, the entertainment press was bombarded with stories about how the filmmaker was about to break Fox with a film that cost a then-astronomical $200 million.

Of course, 'Titanic' went on to gross more than $1.8 billion worldwide. For his part, Cameron ended up accepting the Oscar for best picture, during which he famously declared himself "king of the world."

This time around he's blending state-of-the-art computer graphics and live-action for 'Avatar,' which opens Dec. 18 and stars Sam Worthington as a disabled former Marine who gets a virtual body on a mission to a far-away planet.
"I think it's weird that we have underwear with Taylor's face on it," she told the 'Tonight Show' host, referring to co-star Taylor Lautner.

For his part, Lautner seemed a bit freaked out by the branded undergarment thing as well while appearing across the NBC lot simultaneously on 'Leno.'

Lautner told Jay that while he was on a recent stop-off in Denver for the ongoing 'Twilight' barnstorming promotional tour, a middle-aged woman approached him and said, "I'm wearing the Team Taylor panties right now. Any way I can take them off and have you sign them for me?"

On Wednesday morning, there continued to be no rest for 'Twilight''s wicked and misunderstood, with the cast in Nashville for yet another promotional appearance.

And it looks like all of this hard work has paid off.

According to studio estimates, the movie raked in $140.7 million between its midnight bow on Friday and Sunday to lead the North American box office to its second biggest weekend in history.

The New York Times: "After 'Hard Boiled' in 1992, Mr. Woo became a Hollywood director himself, making fast-moving but largely forgettable movies. (The best was probably the nukes-on-a-train story 'Broken Arrow. After 'Paycheck' in 2003, he went dark as far as feature films were concerned. Now he's back, in two senses: back making movies in Asia and back in theaters with 'Red Cliff,' a nearly two-and-a-half-hour historical epic set in the third century A.D. that reunites him with Tony Leung, one of the stars of 'Hard Boiled.' It would be nice to report that he's also back on top of his game, but 'Red Cliff, while handsome and intelligent and perfectly easy to sit through, never really approaches the visceral tug of Mr. Woo's Hong Kong hits."

Entertainment Weekly: "Flying arrows rain down like deadly needles. Soldiers wield their shields in formations worthy of a Busby Berkeley musical. A beautiful woman pours tea with intoxicating precision. There's plenty of vivid action to fill two and a half hours in John Woo's Chinese historical war epic 'Red Cliff,' a rewarding change of terrain and era for the inventive Hong Kong director. The spectacular battle scenes are the engorged heart of the delirious adventure. But Woo also gets maximum romantic value from Tony Leung as a war hero married to Chiling Lin as the tea-pouring beauty."

New York Magazine: "Back in China after nearly two decades making Hollywood movies, John Woo tries in the military epic 'Red Cliff' to bring off the kind of artsy martial arts (martial-artsy?) period picture that Zhang Yimou ('Hero,' 'House of Flying Daggers') does peerlessly. But he'll always be a vulgarian. His action is cluttered, his compositions have no texture, and he loves him some tacky slow motion. That said, all 148 minutes of 'Red Cliff' are very enjoyable. The scale is huge. The armada of warships might be obvious CGI, but there are thousands of real men onscreen assembling themselves into giant pincers and hacking and slashing away at one another. (Chinese extras work cheap.) Better yet, this is one of the few war films to focus on the art and science of battle-on stratagems, countermoves, counter-counter-moves, and on the game of getting inside one's enemy's head. As in chess, tactics and psychology are inextricable."
The Village Voice: "Woo returned to China-the Mainland-to make his latest film, but scale back he didn't. Conceived as a two-film epic with a combined running time of nearly five hours (reduced to a single two-and-a-half-hour version for extra-Asian consumption), Woo's 'Red Cliff' is the most expensive movie ever produced in the country, and also the biggest-a third-century battle royale, with phalanxes of horsemen and armadas of battleships stretching as far as the eye can see (and, thanks to the CGI paintbox, even farther). The source material is an 800,000-word historical novel, 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms,' written in the 14th century and as deeply embedded in Chinese folklore as Shakeseare's characters are in the West-rooted in fact, but transfigured over time into something more mythic. And although Woo also turned to the more historically accurate text 'Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms' for inspiration, watching 'Red Cliff' feels like being in the presence of gods who have momentarily deigned to walk upon the earth."

The AV Club: "Financed for $80 million, the most money ever allotted to a Chinese production, the immense period action epic 'Red Cliff' is John Woo's first film in the six years since 'Paycheck' ended-for the time being, anyway-his rocky sojourn in Hollywood. From the looks of it, the cultural exchange cut both ways: Woo's flair for slo-mo theatrics has become a common visual stamp for Hollywood actioners, while his longtime interest in Western themes found a natural home in America, even though the blockbuster conventions of movies like 'Mission: Impossible II' often eclipsed those themes. Bringing all his technical know-how back to his home country, Woo attempts an awkward marriage of East and West with 'Red Cliff,' a busy piece of spectacle that integrates scores of extras with the latest in digital figures and environments. The film is both traditional and modern: austere in its engagement with history, and insistent in its showy action beats."

The Hollywood Reporter: As the first film to re-create the 208 A.D. Battle of Chibi, the most famous military feat in Chinese history, John Woo's 'Red Cliff' is a Pan-Asian project with the word "monumental" written all over it. The 140-minute first half that opened across major Asian territories is only a prelude that provides the beams and columns for the narrative framework, but with a few decisive and spot-on action spectacles, it sufficiently kindles expectations for the climactic clash in Part 2. The Western version will be a shorter, condensed one.

Variety: "One of the most ballyhooed Asian productions in recent history, and the most expensive Chinese-language picture ever, John Woo's costume actioner 'Red Cliff' scales the heights. First seg of the two-part, $80 million historical epic -- with 'The Battle of Red Cliff' to follow in late January -- balances character, grit, spectacle and visceral action in a meaty, dramatically satisfying pie that delivers on the hype and will surprise many who felt the Hong Kong helmer progressively lost his mojo during his long years stateside. Pic may, however, disappoint those looking for simply a costume retread of his kinetic, '80s H.K. classics."
This action spectacular, directed by the masterful John Woo, also lends new meaning to the notion of epic. As the most expensive movie ever made in China, it's certainly immense and, even in the truncated (and sometimes slightly frayed) form shown here, quite long -- 2½ hours, rather than five hours for the two-part version shown to Asian audiences. Yet the immensity encompasses such variety, subtlety and intimacy that you may find yourself yearning for more."

He's enlisted the help of producer Scott Mednick, who has already successfully transitioned the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' franchise onto the big screen. Mednick also has credits on '300,' 'Superman Returns' and 'Where the Wild Things Are.'

Details are still sketchy, since there's still no script, but the plan seems to be to adapt the muscular body builders and wannabe porn stars for the original TV runs - who went by names like "Hammer," "Beast," "Mayhem," "Phoenix" and "Venom" -- into movie superheroes.

On the surface, this may seem like a waste of production dollars. After all, NBC wasn't entirely successful in rekindling interest in the 'Gladiators' brand recently.

But hold onto your spandex. NBC has a lot of trouble launching anything these days, and the 'Gladiators' brand carries weight internationally.

In addition to a solid seven-year weekly syndication run, which had a decent core audience in the States, 'Gladiators' was distributed into more than 90 countries, 14 of which adapted the format themselves.

In case you never caught the show, it revolved around Average Joe contestants, who would try to beat a regular crew of muscular "gladiators" in numerous challenges in order to win cash prizes. Challenges included things like trying to get past a hulking gladiator on a balance beam.

Now, Will Ferrell has become the latest Hollywood entity to feel more pain from the ill-received comedy, with Forbes putting him at the head of its list of the most overpaid actors.

Costing Universal Pictures $100 million to produce, and almost that much to market worldwide, 'Land of the Lost" took in only $65 million at the global box office.

In calculating Ferrell's position, Forbes took into account all of the film's revenue, including DVD and TV sales, and juxtaposed it against the actor's lofty A-list salary. The publication also factored in Ferrell's other movies, including 'Semi-Pro,' which took in only $43.9 million worldwide. According to Forbes, for every dollar producers of Ferrell movies spend, they only get back $3.29. (Note: a 329% return on investment doesn't sound half bad to us.)

Coming in second on the list was Ewan McGregor ($3.75 rate of return), who despite appearing in last summer's lucrative 'Angels & Demons,' also has a list of money-losers on his resume that includes everything from 'Deception' to 'The Island.'

Others not escaping infamy include Eddie Murphy (No. 4), star of recent duds including 'Imagine That,' and Jim Carrey, who currently voice stars in Disney's $200 million-budgeted 'A Christmas Carol.'

Here's Forbes' complete "bottom 10":

1. Will Ferrell ($3.29)

2. Ewan McGregor ($3.75)

3. Billy Bob Thornton ($4)

4. Eddie Murphy ($4.43)

5. Ice Cube ($4.77)

6. Tom Cruise ($7.18)

7. Drew Barrymore ($7.43)

8. Leonardo DiCaprio ($7.52)

9. Samuel Jackson ($8.59)

And so one has. Watch the video after the jump. 'The Dark Knight' is a PG-13-rated film, so ostensibly, with his parents' go-ahead, an 11-year-old boy with preternatural improvisation skills and access to face paint and YouTube can post his very own version of late actor Heath Ledger's iconic Joker.

And so one has. Not that some won't find this kind of macabre and creepy.

But give the kid credit -- he went to the mattresses for the role, obtaining everything from the purple blazer to the kelly-green vest. The make-up is just right, and the mimicry of Ledger's diction is dead-on, too.

Excellent use of Hans Zimmer and James Newton-Howard's original movie score, as well.

However, it's hard to tell where the Joker's hard-knock childhood begins and this kid's real-life suburban angst ends. "I need to get out of here," he says at one point. "All they give me is pasta every morning, and it tastes like fish in a really weird way." Ooookay.

So is it appropriate for such a young kid to be mimicking Ledger's Joker less than two years after the actor died tragically? Sure, it probably feels a like it's a little too soon. But it's probably no more inappropriate for a child to, say, take on John Wayne or the Lone Ranger. (Granted, those examples are way old, but you get the point.)
Produced by Sherwood Pictures, the film will focus on four fathers, all friends involved in law enforcement, who re-think their paternal roles after jointly experiencing a tragedy.

Producers will include senior pastor Michael Catt, executive pastor Jim McBride, and ministers Stephen and Alex Kendrick, all of whom previously collaborated on 'Fireproof' and 'Facing the Giants.'
Some write that 'Disney's A Christmas Carol,' a 3D movie featuring Jim Carrey in myriad voice roles, takes Zemeckis' favored digital production technology to another level, with the characters delivering more depth of feeling than what was found in the filmmaker's earlier performance-capture films, 'The Polar Express' and 'Beowulf.'

Other critics, meanwhile, say the film has no feeling at all. Take a look at what the reviews are saying, then tell us what you think.

The New York Times: "But the surprise of this movie -- a welcome one -- is that, in the midst of obeying the rules of modern-day spectacle, it sticks close to some of the sturdy virtues of the source material. Mr. Zemeckis' script retains much of the flavor of Dickens' prose -- not just the catchphrases like 'Bah, humbug' and 'God bless us everyone,' but also the formal diction and the moral concern. The specters that pop out at poor Scrooge on his nightlong ordeal are certainly frightening (parents of young children, consider yourselves warned), but the dread derives much of its force from the cruelty and selfishness that define Scrooge's world."

The Wall Street Journal: "To put it bluntly, if Scroogely, Disney's 3-D animated version of 'A Christmas Carol' is a calamity. The pace is predominantly glacial -- that alone would be enough to cook the goose of this premature holiday turkey -- and the tone is joyless, despite an extended passage of bizarre laughter, several dazzling flights of digital fancy, a succession of striking images and Jim Carrey's voicing of Scrooge plus half a dozen other roles. 'Why so coldhearted?' Scrooge's nephew, Fred, asks the old skinflint. The same question could be asked of Robert Zemeckis, who adapted and directed the film, and of the company that financed it. Why was simple pleasure frozen out of the production? Why does the beloved story feel embalmed by technology? And why are its characters as insubstantial as the snowflakes that seem to be falling on the audience?"

Los Angeles Times: "The 'it's better to give than receive' moral to this story is almost lost under the snowdrifts of special effects. Then there is the blizzard of Jim Carrey's theatrics to weather. The actor voices eight characters, including Scrooge at all ages as well as the three ghosts who haunt him -- you can just see him in the recording studio pingponging manically around during one of the Scrooge-ghost tete-a-tetes."
With Jim Carrey doing an enjoyable multi-character turn and 3D further boosting the appeal, this faithful if intense version of the Dickens perennial looks set to be a hit with family audiences."

Entertainment Weekly: "'Disney's A Christmas Carol' is a marvelous and touching yuletide toy of a movie, and the miracle is that it goes right back to the gilded Victorian spirit of those black-and-white films of yore. From the hypnotic opening shot, which seems to travel through every nook and cranny of London without a cut, Zemeckis signals that he's made a bold technical leap: The faces are now fully expressive, the streets and buildings so real you could touch them. Ebenezer, with his drooping flesh and coldly fearful eyes, is no caricature -- Carrey plays him with scolding sharpness and a plummy deep melancholy -- and his journey unfolds with a classicism that is only enhanced by Zemeckis' spangly visual flamboyance. He makes the ghost of Marley, for instance, a figure of true terror. After this grisly bit of paranormal activity, we can see that Scrooge's redemption has already begun."

The Village Voice: " 'A Christmas Carol' is a whiz-bang 3D thrill-ride with all the emotional satisfaction squeezed out of it. For what it's worth, the movie's performance-capture digital tricks all but abolish the boundary between live action and animation. That gives Jim Carrey, sunken into a great beak of a nose and a never-ending chin, a chance to show off the full range of his india-rubber body language as he morphs from bent old Scrooge to fresh young Scrooge -- in love and not yet warped by want and paternal abuse -- and back again to the money-grubbing grinch who's so cheap that he stoops to filch the coins placed over the eyes of his dead partner, Jacob Marley (Gary Oldman)."

Variety: "Shortchanging traditional animation by literalizing it while robbing actors of their full range of facial expressiveness, the performance-capture technique favored by director Robert Zemeckis looks more than ever like the emperor's new clothes in 'Disney's A Christmas Carol.' Charles Dickens' 1843 novella and screen perennial has been retrofitted here as a so-called thrill ride in which Scrooge zooms above the streets of London and rockets halfway to the moon and back, only because now he technologically can. But while curmudgeons, here qualifying as anyone who might prefer earlier versions of the classic tale, will frown, bright-eyed young'uns will ooh and aah from behind their 3D glasses, resulting in bountiful early holiday B.O. tidings for the company that has now incorporated itself into Dickens' title."
Time Out New York: "The unspoken theme underlying Dickens's prose -- that the money-grubbing Ebenezer is conversing with semblances of his own self -- finds near-perfect cinematic expression through Carrey's efforts. Despite his character's strangely pliable exterior, Carrey endows the miser with a seamless depth of feeling -- a quality only enhanced by the fact that he also plays the three spirits (Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come) who haunt Scrooge and push him toward redemption."

The New York Times: "Richard Kelly, the writer and director of the much-loved 'Donnie Darko' and much-loathed 'Southland Tales,' has a thing for the apocalypse. Like those films, his latest, 'The Box' is sincere and sinister and inevitably ambitious, a serious work that insists on its own seriousness even when it edges toward the preposterous. As in his earlier films, he is again using genre (and pretty actors) as a vehicle to ask questions about the human condition (and conditioning) amid a thicket of high, low and trash cultural allusions and against a backdrop of impending doom. But the end isn't nigh in Mr. Kelly's world. It's here."
The consensus seems to be that while the talent and charm of Jon Heder and Jack Black might have carried the Hess' first two projects, there's nobody around this time to soften the edge of the entirely strange characters and plot lines. The consensus seems to be that while the talent and charm of Jon Heder and Jack Black might have carried the Hess' first two projects, there's nobody around this time to soften the edge of the entirely strange characters and plot lines. See what critics are saying below, then tell us what you think.

The New York Times: "At one point during 'Gentlemen Broncos,' a misfire from the filmmakers who brought the world 'Napoleon Dynamite,' and, more happily, 'Nacho Libre,' I began to wonder how many evacuations a comedy can deliver before they ruin the joke. The spray of vomit that inspired this question had just shot out of the mouth of the hapless teenager at the center of the new movie, an emission preceded or followed by (I lost track) a geyser of snake feces and some nonreptilian, if equally repellent, defecation. The problem, of course, as great gross-out comedies from 'Monty Python's the Meaning of Life' to 'American Pie' have proved time and again, has nothing to do with waste matter and everything to do with timing, good jokes and characters you can laugh with and at, all mostly missing from 'Gentlemen Broncos.'"

Entertainment Weekly: "As they did in 'Napoleon Dynamite' and 'Nacho Libre,' the Hesses claim to celebrate the amusing qualities of misshapen people and their misshapen dreams, insisting that amateurism and bad taste (both in filmmaking and in life) are intentional artistic choices. The audience may have bought the act in 'Napoleon Dynamite.' But this time, the act bombs."

The Hollywood Reporter: "The relentlessly (and overbearingly) quirky imagination of filmmaker Jared Hess yields diminishing returns in his third feature. While 'Napoleon Dynamite' was carried by Jon Heder's offbeat charm and 'Nacho Libre' by Jack Black's manic energy, 'Gentlemen Broncos' has little to offer besides unrelenting strangeness. It pretty much peaks with its wonderful opening credit sequence, featuring a procession of mock paperback covers of sci-fi novels."

The Los Angeles Times: "Watching 'Gentlemen Broncos' sparks the pressing question: 'Is it worse to be clueless or self-deluded?' That's because most every character in this ill-conceived curio from the quirky minds of co-writers Jared and Jerusha Hess ('Napoleon Dynamite,' 'Nacho Libre') is either one or the other -- or both. Satire aside, what the oddball folks here never feel is real, despite the filmmakers' claims of autobiographical parallels. Instead, badly dressed and unflatteringly shot, they come off like punch lines to jokes that never pay off."
This time, the misfit in question is an aspiring science-fiction writer easily upstaged by his idol, a pompous (but published) fantasy author, played by 'Flight of the Conchords' star Jemaine Clement like the cosmic love child of Tim Curry and Orson Welles. Pic tickled its target demo at Fantastic Fest, though it's hard to imagine Fox Searchlight reaching enough geeks in theaters to come anywhere near 'Nacho Libre''s $80 million."
The Huffington Post: "Apparently 'Napoleon Dynamite' was the happy accident. A flat, self-consciously mannered film, 'Gentlemen Broncos' wants to have it both ways. It wants the audience to laugh at the cheesy aesthetic of amateur aspiring artists, even as it offers its own amateurish version of a film comedy."

The biography, released earlier this year, focuses on Syrian-American Abdulrahman Zeitoun, who chose, amid the post-hurricane flooding, to defend his business and his home, and to help his fellow New Orleans residents.

Already a fan of Eggers' writing, Demme, whose extensive credits include 'Silence of the Lambs,' 'Philadelphia' and 'Rachel Getting Married,' said the idea for an animated adaptation came to him upon studying the novel's cover.

"I was staring at the book, and there's this wonderful line drawing on the cover, the character of Zeitoun in his canoe, paddling through a submerged neighborhood," Demme told the Times. And I suddenly imagined, "What if we could do an animated film and visualize the experiences of the Zeitoun family and all of New Orleans?"

Demme didn't reveal a production time line for the project, or which studio might release it.

For his part, Eggers already has experience adapting books into screenplays, having worked with filmmaker Spike Jonze on the currently released adaptation of Maurice Sendak's 'Where the Wild Things Are.'

And in addition to another writing credit on the recent indie release 'Away We Go,' Eggers is also working to adapt his 2006 novel 'What Is the What' into a feature.

In fact, Demme said it was 'What Is the What,' which focuses on a young refugee from the Sudanese civil war, that first intrigued him after his son, Brooklyn, recommended it. He said, "Dad, you've got to read this book; it changed my life," Demme told the Times. "And I read it, and it changed my life, too."

The original movie, which won an Oscar for cinematography, starred Joseph Cotten as a struggling pulp-fiction novelist who travels to post-World War II Vienna after an old schoolmate (Orson Welles) offers him a job there. When Welles' Harry Lime dies mysteriously, Cotten's Holly Martins soon finds himself in a tangled web involving a burgeoning black market, the multi-national police and a Czech girlfriend (Alida Valli).

As this remains a murky rumor, it's unclear as to which characters DiCaprio and Maguire would play, or where a modernized version might be set (postwar Baghdad seems like one compelling possibility). The actors reps have yet to confirm or deny the rumor ... so we'll continue to keep our fingers crossed.

Ralph Fiennes will direct and star in the independently financed movie, playing the lead role of military leader Gaius Martius Coriolanus, who after being banished from the Roman army, teams with his Volscian army rival (played by Butler) to seek his revenge.

Vanessa Redgrave is already attached to the film, and William Hurt is also rumored to be involved.

For his part, Butler currently co-stars alongside Jamie Foxx in 'Law Abiding Citizen,' which had surprising pop at last weekend's domestic box office, taking in $21 million.

That had to come as somewhat of a relief for Butler, who is coming off a string of middling romantic comedies ('P.S. I Love You,' 'The Ugly Truth') and flopped thrillers ('RocknRolla,' 'Gamer') since '300' took in a whopping $456 million globally in 2007 and made him a star in the process.
