Anthony Hopkins to Play 'Bond 23' Villain?

In what may go down as one of the best James Bond casting moves ever, Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is reportedly up for the villain role in the as-yet-untitled 'Bond 23.'

The report comes from The Sun (insert grain of salt here), which quotes a source as saying, "The only stumbling block seems to be the number of films he is signing up for. There is a chance the character they want him to play could become a regular feature, like Blofeld back in the day." No other information about the character was given.

Whether or not the report is actually true, the idea of Hopkins playing a villain in a Bond movie (or any villain, really) is enough to get us excited. He knows how to make even the biggest of baddies charming (hello, 'Silence of the Lambs') and would be a perfect match for Daniel Craig's tough-guy persona.

In the meantime, what does that mean for Javier Bardem, who was also rumored to play a villain in the movie? We don't know.

Either way, we're just happy to see that 'Bond 23,' which has long been plagued by setbacks due to MGM's financial woes, is continuing to move forward.

The movie, which will be directed by Sam Mendes ('American Beauty'), will also see the return of Judi Dench as Bond's no-nonsense boss, M, and is currently pegged for a Nov. 9, 2012, release.

Twenty-one-year-old actress Mia Wasikowska is entering the prime of her movie career, thanks to key roles in the $1 billion-grossing 'Alice in Wonderland' and the Oscar-nominated indie 'The Kids Are All Right.'

This Friday, she steps into even bigger shoes, taking on the title role in Cary Fukunaga's adaptation of the Charlotte Bronte novel 'Jane Eyre.'

Moviefone recently spoke to the actress about the movie, during which she revealed what it was like having Michael Fassbender and Jamie Bell pining for her affections and why corsets are just as painful as they look. She also gave us the scoop on working with Glenn Close in the upcoming movie 'Albert Nobbs.'

I would assume that was intentional from the get-go.
Mia Wasikowska: Yeah, I think so. I think originally that was sort of what Cary [Fukunaga]'s idea for the film was. I hope that it achieved that. I think it did.

You did a lot of kissing scenes with Michael Fassbender, who is 12 years your senior. That first take must have been awkward.
[Laughs] You know what? Yeah. You just kind of get over it, and you go with it. But Michael's the best. He's just the coolest guy, and so it was fun.

He's pretty easy on the eyes, so I imagine it wasn't that bad.
[Laughs] Yeah. I pretend to complain.

You also have Jamie Bell after you in the movie. I think the correct word to describe you is "spoiled."
Uh-huh. I'm in a bit of an enviable position there. [Laughs]

We've seen a lot of 'Jane Eyre' movies over the years. What is it about this film that makes it stand out above the rest?
Well, I think that we kind of wanted to ground it in a way. It is a dramatic story, but we didn't want to make it too melodramatic. What I liked about Cary's vision for it, initially, was that he sort wanted to bring it down and make it a lot younger. Jane really is 18 years old in the story, and I think often what other versions have done is, she's always sort of presented a little older. Even I was, like, 20 when we did it, but I think people still thought I was quite a young Jane, and it sort of magnifies the difference in age between her and Rochester. And I think was kind of exciting, and something that I hope is different.

Did you read the book beforehand?
Yeah, I did. I was reading the book, and I was on the fifth chapter when I emailed my agent, and I was like, "This is great. Is there a script? Is anyone making this?" And there wasn't at the time. And it was, like, two months later that she e-mailed me. She sent me the script, and was like, "It's going ahead, and the director would like to meet you." It was great timing. I had just read the book.

One of the things I loved about 'Jane Eyre' were the costumes. Was there any point in which you wanted to steal them?
Hell no! I couldn't wait to get out of those things. [Laughs]

Was it torture?
Oh, yeah. I've never been happier to be born in the time that I am in than when we first hopped into those corsets. They are as bad as everybody says -- and worse. [Laughs] ... I was so excited, I would count down the days until I had a scene in my pajamas.

Speaking of corsets, you're also in 'Albert Nobbs' with Glenn Close. How is that going?
Great! We just wrapped, and I'm really excited about the film. Glenn Close wrote the script, and she's had the rights to the story for 10 years; she was in the off-Broadway play. It's her passion project. Rodrigo Garcia, who I worked with when I was 16 in 'In Treatment,' is directing it, and I think it was a good shoot, so I can't wait for people to see it.

You had a huge year in 2010, with 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'The Kids Are All Right.' Do you find yourself getting more offers now?
Yeah. I mean, it's been really great. They were very different productions, on different scales, as well, but 'Kids' has had such great luck in terms of being able to reach as many people. So it's been good having two very different things out there.

Do you have any plans to work with Tim Burton again?
I would love to. He's the coolest. I had a lot of fun working with him. That would be great. We'll see.

You're 21 now, and your movie career is really kicking into full gear. What kinds of roles are you looking to do in the future?
I want to keep doing roles that are challenging and different. I like doing lots of different roles. I think to remain interested in [acting], it's important to challenge yourself and do things that are scary or different from something I've done before, so yeah. I want to do that; things that challenge me and challenge the audience.

Is Australia still home to you? Or are you planning the big move to L.A.?
Yeah. So far, I've been able to pull it off living at home in Australia, and I kind of want to continue that. I like the perspective and I like the distance from L.A. and Hollywood, and it's always kind of great to go home, and very grounding. I love seeing my family. I don't really have a place of my own, but I like going home. It's a bit of a split world.

I loved you on 'In Treatment.' Even though your movie career is booming right now, would you ever consider returning to television?
'In Treatment' was one of the coolest experiences ever for me, and I loved that character. I'm not sure, though. It would depend. I feel so lucky to have had that role, and to be able to have explored that character in such depths.

If you thought 'The Chronicles of Riddick' wasn't bad enough, then prepare yourself for 'The Chronicles of Rick Roll,' executive producer Andrew Fischer's new movie that pieces together a seemingly endless number of Internet memes into one surprisingly coherent story.

The story itself is simple: Rick Rolland (Fischer) meets a beautiful girl online, only to watch her get sucked into the treacherous Internet portals. In order to save her, Rick must travel inside the Internet himself, where he meets a number of Internet-made celebrities, from Bed Intruder Antoine Dodson to Double Rainbow's Paul Vasquez. It's sort of like 'TRON' meets meets 'Alice in Wonderland' meets 'Lord of the Rings' meets every other major blockbuster from the last five-to-10 years.

But before you go calling 'Rick Roll' the next 'Date Movie,' check out the trailer (after the jump), because, for all of its hyper-meta references, and as much as this author hates to admit it, it's actually kind of funny. There are a number of clever cameos (among them "Boom goes the dynamite!"'s Brian Collins) and Fischer seems to be self-aware enough to know that what he's doing is ultimately silly. Best of all, not once did it play that awful Rick Astley song.

Still, even though this trailer may wind up being just another Internet meme (or a joke on us, for that matter), Fisher is apparently serious about getting the film onto the big screen -- or so he tells CNN. Fisher "hopes the new trailer will help convince financial backers to jump on board," according to this interview.

The question now remains: Can this (admittedly funny) premise actually sustain a feature-length running time? Our early guess: probably not. Sure, it was fun to see Dodson poke fun at himself again, but there's a reason Internet celebrities are only given 15 minutes of fame. Plus, we're still hurting from that last parody movie.

You can check the trailer above and judge for yourself. Then let us know: Should 'The Chronicles of Rick Roll' actually be a movie? Or should it stay on the Internet?

Michael Fassbender is on the verge of a breakout year.

After starring in such movies as 'Hunger,' based on the 1981 hunger strike at Maze prison, and Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning 'Inglourious Basterds,' this year the German-born actor is finally stepping into leading-man territory in America -- first, with 'Jane Eyre,' in which he plays the brooding Rochester.

Moviefone recently spoke to Fassbender about his role in the beautifully shot adaptation, co-starring 'Alice in Wonderland' beauty Mia Wasikowska. Moviefone: Were you forced to read 'Jane Eyre' in school?
Michael Fassbender: No, I wasn't, actually. That wasn't on our curriculum. But my sister and mother had always talked about it, and that was kind of the reason I wanted to do it, really. They were such big fans, and so I thought, "Well, let's see what they think of what I can do with Rochester."

How were you approached for the role?
I was approached awhile back. I can't remember exactly when, but they just said, "Are you interested in playing Rochester?" And I said yes. And then Cary [Joji Fukunaga] came on board and I was very excited by the prospects of [the movie], having seen 'Sin Nombre,' and what he did with that film and what a beautiful story that was. And then Mia was cast, and I watched her in 'In Treatment,' and I was like, "Oh, man. This could be really exciting. I just have to try to keep up with these two and we could have something really interesting."

How closely did you work with Mia on creating the chemistry between Jane and Rochester?
Well, I don't think chemistry is something that you can really create. I had so much respect for her as an actor that I just wanted to make sure that I was totally there for her in whatever ways I could help, just as a fellow actor. There was a big respect there, and I think that there was the same coming from her end. And it just worked. I don't really know how you develop something like that. We didn't hang out extensively to create that. I was doing a lot of homework on my own. We did do some rehearsal time, but she's just a real professional and really brilliant, so I just sort of had to, as I say, try to keep up with her and then all of that will be taken care of.

Rochester's a very serious guy. Did you find yourself trying to lighten the mood in between takes?
Yeah. I kind of tend to do that if the material is heavy -- not always, but sometimes to be a little bit caught unaware, or to be relaxed going into a scene is an interesting technique to try and endorse. But not all the time. Sometimes it's not good to be joking. [Laughs] But Mia and I had a good relationship, so we would have a bit of a laugh in between takes, or right up to action, really, because it distracts you. There's a lot of stuff [happening on set] ... Sometimes you just want to be distracted by something else.

Between 'Jane Eyre' and 'X-Men,' do you see 2011 as your breakout year in America?
I don't really think like that, to be honest. I just try to get the jobs, and then I try to do them properly, and then all the other stuff kind of happens one way another -- or not. I don't really think about that, to be honest.

Are you busier now than ever?
Definitely, yeah. Last year was my busiest year to date. I've been sort of going non-stop since February, really. I'm working at the moment with Steve [McQueen] in New York, and then I'm gonna go straight to Pinewood to start working on 'Prometheus,' so yeah. It's pretty full-on. I think after the summer, there's [another possible] job, and then after 'Alien' I think I'll take a little breather.

Since you're not from America, do you find that fame and celebrity affects you less?
To be honest with you, I don't have to deal with it. Maybe that will change after 'X-Men.' I do find all of that stuff -- it's weird, you know? But it's part and parcel of it. I don't like to think that it would change my usual routine of walking down to the coffee shop, or walking down the street or leading my life the way I want to live my life. But I haven't really experienced it, to be honest. Every now and again, somebody [will say to me], "Oh, you were in 'Inglourious Basterds!' ... And all of the time, it's just a brief exchange, and a nice one. But I don't have to deal with it the way that somebody like Brad Pitt would ... People don't really recognize me, I don't think, which is great.
Could you give us any more teasers?
I'm afraid I can't, because I just don't really know what I'm allowed to say. All I'll say is, what's interesting [about the story] is the coming together of Charles and Erik, and watching both of them formulate their ideas, which we come to know in the series later, and how their friendship sort of fractures. That's a pretty interesting dynamic going on between the two characters. What we were sort of working towards is like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. That's about all I can really tell you.

Did you actually have to audition for the role?
I did, yeah. Which I don't mind. Well, listen: I've always hated auditioning, to be honest [Laughs] ... They'd already cast James [McAvoy], and they wanted to see -- well, they wanted to see me. [Laughs] I think Matthew [Vaughn] had always wanted me for the part, but the studio wanted to make sure [because] they were investing so much ... Which is understandable.

Did you base your performance on Ian McKellen's? Or did you do your own thing?
I did my own thing. Ian McKellen, obviously, is Ian McKellen. [Laughs] He's brilliant. That's clear. But I wanted to do something fresh. The last two installments of the franchise weren't that successful with the fans ... So I wanted to just bring something totally fresh, and I just based everything on the source material, the comic book material, and drew everything from that. And there's an awful lot of it. It's pretty dense stuff, and some pretty life-changing stuff happens to him before we meet him in the film. So when we come to meet him in this film, it's sort of like this lone wolf on a mission.

You mentioned earlier that you're starring in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus.' You must be over the moon.
Over the moon, yeah! Exactly. In space, literally! [Laughs] It's amazing. Jesus. I mean, I'm pinching myself on a regular basis, really. I couldn't have asked for a better position to be in. Ridley Scott is obviously a super-smart guy, and a great filmmaker. And it's a really, really good script. I was really surprised by the originality of it, and yet it still holds a lot of what the original films -- the story, rather; there's still a very strong link to that. But then it's a totally fresh outlook, as well. So, yeah. I'm really excited about it. It's a very intelligent script. I've got about a week between this film and that, so I've got to get my shit together. [Laughs]

You're working with Steve McQueen again on 'Shame.' How different has that experience been from 'Hunger'? I would imagine the Craft service table is a lot better this time around.
[Laughs] Well, I have to say that the Craft service in general is great. It's such a high quality here. [The film is] brilliant, man. I mean, Steve is closest to my heart and 'Hunger' is closest to my heart out of all the jobs that I've done, and to be working with him again is a pretty special experience. And Sean Bobbit behind the camera, these are really beautiful people and real artists, so I just feel really privileged to be working along side them. And it's tough, and it's intense and all of the things that you would imagine that were involved in 'Hunger' are involved in this. But it's a different story, and I can't tell you what the story is. [Laughs]

According to domestic box office numbers (via Box Office Mojo), 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' has grossed a whopping $63,300,218 to date, making it the third-highest-grossing documentary of all time. (Yep, that's more than 'Sicko' and 'Bowling for Columbine' combined.)

The only two documentaries standing in Bieber's way from taking the box-office crown: 'March of the Penguins,' which grossed over $77 million in its run, and Michael Moore's controversial doc 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' which grossed an astounding $119 million in 2004.

EW.com has just posted an exclusive video preview of the brand-new 'Toy Story' animated short 'Hawaiian Vacation,' set to premiere before 'Cars 2' on Jun. 24.

In it, Ken (Michael Keaton) and Barbie (Jodi Benson) try to sneak away to Hawaii with their new owner, Bonnie, only to discover that they never actually left her bedroom. From then on, it's up to Woody, Buzz and the rest of the toys to turn Bonnie's room into the ultimate Hawaiian getaway.

EW.com interviewed the short's director, Gary Rydstrom, about the short, in which he also teased the short that will be shown before this November's 'Muppets' movie and discussed the possibility of a 'Toy Story 4.'

"They haven't announced what that one's about, but the idea is to try making more," he said of the 'Muppets' short. "There are several stories being worked on, different shorts in the pipeline. We discovered with these characters that it's not necessarily easy to come up with stories for 'Toy Story' shorts, but it certainly is fun and there's a rich vein of material."

'Burlesque' hits DVD shelves today, and Moviefone was lucky enough to chat with the film's director, Steve Antin, about his eye-popping movie musical, which stars newbie actress Christina Aguilera as an aspiring singer who climbs the ranks at a local L.A. burlesque club run by none other than Cher.

We also talked about everything that's happened since the movie hit theaters in November, from the Oscar snub of the Golden Globe-winning song 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me' (boo!) to Cher's (undeserved!) Razzie nomination.

After the jump, read his thoughts on what inspired him to write 'Burlesque,' the future of movie-musicals in Hollywood and why America is being a little too hard on Aguilera right now.

Moviefone: I'm still mad that 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me' was snubbed by the Oscars. What was your take on that?
Steve Antin: I don't care. Not even a little bit. I mean, I just don't. If I were gonna be mad that it got snubbed, I'd have to be upset that 'Bound to You' [was snubbed, too], which is the most spectacular song. I mean, really listen to Christina [Aguilera's] 'Bound to You.' It's jaw-dropping. It's so good. The song got recognized by the Golden Globes, and it really doesn't add up to much for me at all, any of it. It's all nice, but I don't care. I just don't. Isn't that weird? [Laughs]

Were you at least upset that Cher was targeted by the Razzies? I thought she was awesome in the movie.
To tell you the truth, I don't even know what the Razzies are ... People know not to talk to me about anything negative in connection with the movie, or reference to the movie, or any press or anything, because I won't hear it. I just don't care. Look: The movie's ripe for people to take shots at. It's a big, fun, silly romantic comedy-musical. It's so not meant to be taken seriously. It's just a throwback. If you look at some of the musicals that inspired this movie, like 'Gold Diggers of 1933,' and all those MGM musicals, they were thin, you know? [Laughs] They were really thin! And they were just fun, they were just feel-good movies. People just wanted to go to the movies to have a good time. And that's really the kind of movie that I set out to make, just a fun, feel-good movie.

Not every movie has to be 'Citizen Kane.'
No, it doesn't. Listen: If you're going to see 'American Beauty,' you're in the wrong theater. [Laughs]

I know you've said in previous interviews that it took a long time to get Cher to sign on. How long did it actually take?
Gosh, I really don't know the timeline, exactly. But it took a long time, because she said yes, and then she said no, and then she said yes, and then she said no, and yes and no, and yes and no, and yes and no, and then no. She just kept changing her mind and texting me at four in the morning, saying, "Oh God, I think I made a mistake. I can't do this movie!" And that's just her. That's her way of getting there. But it was a process.

Did you have any kind of back-up plan just in case?
No! [Laughs] How stupid was I, right? I had total blind faith. I'd get her back in a room, or get on the phone with her, and then she would say, "Yes, yes, yes. You're right, you're right, you're right, you're right." And I just knew that was going to be the process. I knew that from early on.

And it worked!
Yeah, it did! I just hoped that she would show up the first day. [Laughs] That was my biggest fear. And she did! The thing about Cher is, once she's in, she's in. There's no question about it. It was just making sure that she was there the first day.

Cher had a lot of chemistry with Christina Aguilera in the movie. How much of that was natural?
It really was a lot of natural chemistry when they first met. They really liked each other, thank God! It could have been tough. You never know how actors are going to respond to each other. They had this sort of mutual admiration society thing going. They really appreciated each other, and respected each other and really enjoyed each other's company. They really had a good time being in scenes together.

This was Christina's big-screen debut. Was there a lot of hand-holding involved?
Yeah, a lot. I promised her that I would take care of her, and that I would work closely with her, and that I would push her when I felt like she needed to be pushed and would watch [her] with a very critical eye. And I did. She never said no to anything. Every time I said, "We gotta do it again, we gotta do it again. We gotta do it like this, we gotta do it like that," she was always, always, always up for the challenge. And I was surprised. I really was, because I really didn't know what to expect -- from Cher or Christina -- once I got on the set, because you never know.

Christina was such a trooper. It really was a collaboration. We talked about [her character] Ali, the scenes, the character, her arc, her performance and how to get there endlessly. We were in a lot of rehearsals together, too. She has an extraordinary learning curve, Christina, so by halfway through the movie, she was a completely different actor than she was from the first day. She just learned so much -- and so fast. She's a little bit like a freaky sponge. That's why she's Christina Aguilera. She's just so good. She really pays attention, and watches and takes it all in. She's an incredibly intelligent, thoughtful person. She really exceeded everybody's expectations.

Do you think people are being a little too hard on her after the Super Bowl incident?
Oh, God. I'm so unaware of it. I don't even know. I heard a little bit about it. I watched her sing on the Super Bowl. No one sings the National Anthem likes Christina Aguilera, so they should f*ck themselves, you know? [Laughs] I mean, if anybody's saying anything negative about her ... She is the voice of a generation, there are no two ways about it. She's an extraordinary, talented young woman. She's very hard-working, really focused; she's a great mom. Maybe they are being too hard on her. I really don't know. I just completely turn in the opposite direction from any of that weird criticism and negativity. I just won't hear it.

You were talking before about how 'Burlesque' was a throwback to old-school musicals. Did you have a specific movie in mind while writing it?
I had a bunch. I mean, there were so many movies that inspired me -- all the musicals from Hollywood's Golden Age to, obviously, 'Cabaret.' There were so many movies that became like a dictionary of reference and information for me; that inspired me. It's an endless list of musicals that I watched as a kid, and I loved and enjoyed. I still have some musicals in me ... There's a different kind of a musical that I'm gonna make next. It's completely different than 'Burlesque.' Totally, totally, totally different.

Is that your next project?
I don't know. It might be. I'm not sure ... I've got some other things happening, some other musicals. I've got several musicals in development, so [we'll] see. I've got a thriller in development, too. And I have a TV show in development that I'm executive producing that I co-worte with Dave Goldberg. But I don't know. I just needed to take, like, five seconds and take a deep breath and say, "What the hell am I gonna do next?"

Back when 'Moulin Rouge!' and 'Chicago' came out, it seemed like the movie-musical had made an official comeback in Hollywood. Now that's sort of stalled. Do you think there's still a place in Hollywood for the genre?
Unquestionably. I don't see that it's stalled at all. Like, where? I mean, 'Burlesque' is creeping up towards $100 million worldwide. That's a lot of money ... I wouldn't say it's a genre that's dying. There are a lot of musicals [that] people are talking about every day. There are fewer movies being made on the whole, obviously, so it might feel like that. But no, it doesn't seem like there are any less being made than there were 10 years ago. I don't think so. Unless I'm totally wrong. What the hell do I know? Here's the truth: I know a little about a lot. [Laughs]

Well, they're remaking 'A Star Is Born' and 'The Bodyguard,' apparently, so maybe I'm wrong.
Exactly. Clint Eastwood is making 'A Star Is Born,' right? Go figure!

Did you learn anything new about 'Burlesque' while doing the DVD commentary?
I don't even remember the commentary. I was in a fog. I was in post-production, and I had just fallen down a staircase, like, two days before. [Laughs] I literally fell down a staircase coming out of the post-production facility one night; I tore my rotator cuff. The intensity of making the movie and going right into the post-production process in a musical of this scale, I wish I could remember what I said on the director's commentary. But I'm sure it was all nonsensical. [Laughs] I'm sure I made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I barely remember doing it, except that the guy who was running the session was actually really, really, really lovely. That's what I do remember. [He had] actually worked on another movie that I had done years ago as an actor, Sandra Bernhard's movie 'Without You I'm Nothing.'

You began your Hollywood career as an actor. Do you still get recognized for your roles in movies like 'The Goonies' and 'The Accused'?
I do! The problem is, I don't remember any of those movies or what I did in them, because I never saw them. Actually, that's not true. I saw 'The Accused' once with Jodie [Foster]. Jodie said to me, I remember, "You gotta be able to go to the movies and watch yourself with an audience." And we did one night. We went somewhere and watched the movie, and I think I sort of, like, had my hand covering my eyes. I don't like to watch myself in movies, so most of the things that I've done -- there are a few that I've seen -- I've never really watched. I would see, like, a rough cut maybe once, and then I wouldn't watch it again, because I just wasn't a big fan of my acting work. [Laughs] I was doing it since I was nine years old. It was a job. But I learned a lot being an actor. But people do recognize me. [They'll say], "Can you tell me about that scene where so and so ...?" And I'm like, "I don't even remember the scene." [Laughs]

The Oscar-nominated actor, who will also serve as co-host of the 83rd telecast (Sunday, Feb. 27, 8:30PM on ABC), has reportedly closed a deal to star in the highly-anticipated 'Wizard of Oz' prequel 'Oz: The Great and Powerful,' based on the novel by L. Frank Baum.

The film, in which Franco will chronicle the titular character's early days as a young illusionist, will reteam him with 'Spider-Man' director Sam Raimi, with a script by Mitchell Kapner ('The Whole Nine Yards') and Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire ('Rabbit Hole').

Robert Downey Jr. was originally set to star in the film, until he dropped out of the project in January. Johnny Depp was rumored as a possible replacement, but reportedly passed.

This will be about the 500th upcoming project for Franco. This spring, he'll appear in 'Your Highness,' from 'Pineapple Express' director David Gordon Green, followed by this fall's 'Planet of the Apes' prequel 'Rise of the Apes.'

We're breaking down all the Oscar contenders for you, so that you can decide whether you want to see them -- or at the very least, be able to hold your own at cocktail parties. Next up: 'Another Year,' the latest dramedy from writer-director Mike Leigh.

Nominated For: Best Original Screenplay (Mike Leigh)

What It's About: The movie follows a year in the life of a happily married couple, ironically named Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen), and their interactions with friends and family, including their grown son, Joe (Oliver Maltman), and Gerri's boozing co-worker, Mary (Lesley Manville).

Why You Should See It: 'Another Year' is another good example of Leigh's ('Secrets and Lies,' 'Vera Drake') ability to create extraordinary comedy and drama out of an otherwise simple plot. But the star of the film is Lesley Manville, whose performance as Mary is funny, tragic and ultimately heartbreaking. Although we loved this year's stellar Best Actress lineup, we wish voters had found room for what may have been the year's most overlooked performance.

It's Kind of Like: 'All or Nothing' meets 'Your Friends & Neighbors'

According to sources close to the movie, Kardashian, who can currently be seen on E!'s 'Kim and Kourtney Take New York,' recently met with the executive producers of the movie, and is reportedly being considered for the role of John's daughter-in-law, Kim (natch).

Of course, nothing has been signed, and as far as we know, Kim hasn't tweeted anything about it, so for now we'll take this report with a grain of salt.

As we previously reported, Travolta is set to play the legendary mob boss in the movie, which producer Marc Fiore claims is "going to be the new 'Godfather.'"

Unless you count her appearances on reality television, Kim Kardashian's acting resume is pretty bare. She's appeared in just two movies thus far, including the 2008 bomb 'Disaster Movie,' as well as a couple appearances on television (among them a role on 'CSI: New York'). If cast, this would be her first major movie role.

Tell us: Do you think Kim Kardashian has what it takes to become a movie star? Or is she due for another reality check?

Oscar host James Franco continued to add mystery and intrigue to Sunday night's ceremony today by posting a new YouTube video that teases him performing a number from 'Grease' with co-host Anne Hathaway.

The video naturally has Franco, who recently joined Twitter, taking on the role of Danny Zuko, and Hathaway as Sandy Olsson, post-makeover. Based on the costumes and set, they appear to be re-enacting the penultimate number, 'You're the One That I Want.'

Will the video be shown during the Oscars ceremony? Is it just a promo? Or is it just another one of Franco's crazy pet projects? We're not really sure. One thing we do know, though: We just got really, really excited for the Oscars.

Watch the video after the jump.
Next up: 'The Town,' about a bank robber who falls for his hostage.
Nominated For: Best Supporting Actor (Jeremy Renner)

What It's About: Things get complicated for Boston bank robber Doug McCray (Ben Affleck) when he falls for a woman (Rebecca Hall) whom he once held hostage. The affair threatens to destory some of his closest relationships, including the one he has with Jem (Renner), Doug's hot-headed partner in crime, and ex-girlfriend, Krista, played by the nearly unrecognizable Blake Lively. All the while, Doug finds himself on the trail of a no-holds-barred FBI agent (Jon Hamm) who is determined to bring him to justice.

Why You Should See It: Renner is scary-good as Jem, deservedly earning his second consecutive nomination (following last year for 'The Hurt Locker'). But 'The Town' is ultimately Ben Affleck's show. In his second directorial effort, Affleck proves that 'Gone Baby Gone' wasn't a fluke, as he exhibits grace, skill and control behind the camera. Though he has a ways to go before we start calling him the next Robert Redford or Kevin Costner, after 'The Town' we're more than happy to take this comeback kid seriously again.
We're breaking down all the Oscar contenders for you, so that you can decide whether you want to see them -- or at the very least, be able to hold your own at cocktail parties. Next up: 'Blue Valentine,' about the beginning and inevitable end of a marriage between two young lovers (Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams).

Nominated for: Best Actress (Williams)

What It's About: The movie follows Dean (Gosling) and Cindy (Williams) as they fall in and out of love over the span of five years. Told out of chronological order, the audience sees everything from how they met to their marriage and subsequent divorce.

Why You Should See It: Because it features two of the best young actors in Hollywood at the top of their game. Gosling and Williams work brilliantly off each other, and paint a portrait of a married couple that is both sympathetic and realistic. Much as we love that Williams earned a nomination in the Best Actress category, that Gosling was snubbed in Best Actor is ridiculous, to put it lightly.

The 83rd Academy Awards are just under two weeks away, and the race for Best Picture has narrowed to two movies: 'The King's Speech' and 'The Social Network.'

Once again, voters are caught in a classic old-school-vs.-new-school debate, one that won't be determined until the envelope is opened on Sunday, Feb. 27.

While we wait, the Moviefone team has decided to take the race into our own hands to determine not only which movie will win, but which movie should win. Will 'The King's Speech' be the movie everyone remembers in 30 years? Or is 'The Social Network' the best movie of 2010 after all?

Watch our podcast after the jump, then join in on the debate in the comments.

According to an exclusive report from Billboard, Paramount is releasing an expanded version of 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,' on Mar. 4. The new movie, titled 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 2.0' (natch), will reportedly feature "20 pieces of music not in the current edition," and, we would assume, hoards of screaming tweens in theaters across the country.

Paramount also announced that a DVD version of the movie will be released in August.

That Biebs is already getting a reboot should come to little surprise. Though the original movie finsihed second at the weekend box office behind the Adam Sandler comedy 'Just Go With It,' it still made an impressive $30.3 million. The film also won over the majority of critics, and currently holds a steady 66 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Further details on '2.0' have yet to be announced. For more info on 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,' click here.
We're breaking down all the Oscar contenders for you, so that you can decide whether you want to see them -- or at the very least, be able to hold your own at cocktail parties. Next up: '127 Hours,' based on the harrowing true story of real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston.

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor (James Franco), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song

What It's About: Avid mountain climber Aron Ralston's (Franco) hiking trip turns dangerous when he slips and falls into a cave, where his arm gets trapped by a boulder. He spends the next 127 hours fighting to survive and soon realizes that the only way to get out alive is to amputate his own arm.

Why You Should See It: James Franco carries the movie. It's his best performance to date, one that showcases all of his strengths as an actor: charisma, humor, depth, drama and more. He's supported nicely by director Danny Boyle, whose unique vision helps to turn this true story into something that is both cinematic and ultimately inspirational. Sure, the amputation scene is tough to sit through, but the emotional payoff is well worth it.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 'American Idol' season 3 winner has landed her first leading role in a biopic about the life of American gospel singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson.

The movie, which will be directed by Euzhan Palcy, is based on the 1993 book 'Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel.' Jim Evering is penning the script.

Barrino will also gain 30-45 pounds for the role, her rep told RadarOnline.

Filming begins in April, according to the report.
Barrino has already had a number of acting gigs under her belt, though never anything of this caliber. She made her acting debut in the 2005 Lifetime TV movie 'Life Is Not a Fairy Tale,' based on her autobiography. She also played the lead role in Broadway's 'A Color Purple' in 2007.

She was reportedly up for the role of Effie White in the big-screen adaptation of 'Dreamgirls,' which eventually went to Oscar winner and fellow 'American Idol' season 3 contestant Jennifer Hudson.

Last August, Barrino was hospitalized in Pineville, N.C., which was later confirmed as a suicide attempt.

We're breaking down all the Oscar contenders for you, so that you can decide whether you want to see them -- or at the very least, be able to hold your own at cocktail parties. Next up: 'Inception,' the mind-bender from director Christopher Nolan.

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects

What It's About: Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief who possesses the unique ability to enter a person's dream and steal his ideas. Early on, he's approached by Saito (Ken Watanabe), a businessman wishing to break up his biggest competitor's (Pete Postlewaithe) empire. To do so, Cobb must assemble a team of engineers and access Maurice's son's (Cillian Muprhy) subconscious, where they will then plant the idea ("inception") that Maurice's business must be destroyed. If he can succeed, Dom will be able to return to America to be with his children, whom he hasn't seen since being accused of murdering his wife (Marion Cotillard).

Why You Should See It: The sheer spectacle alone is worth the price. The visuals and art direction we see in 'Inception''s dream worlds are stunning, and the story itself is so ambitious we probably won't see anything like it for years to come. Repeat viewings are essential to appreciate everything 'Inception' has to offer. In fact, we're still trying to figure out what really happens at the end.

It also introduced the moviegoing public to Moviefone's Breakout Star of 2010, Tom Hardy, who gave one of the year's most charming and, let's be honest, sexy performances of the year. Above all else, the movie belongs to Christopher Nolan, whose visionary direction had our jaws dropping in theaters -- and then again on Jan. 25 when he wasn't nominated for Best Director. Surely his snub was just a dream?

How You Can See It: Now on DVD
In the film, DiCaprio plays controversial figure J. Edgar Hoover, who was the director of the FBI from 1935 up until his death in 1972.

Clint Eastwood is helming the project, from a script by Oscar-winning writer Dustin Lance Black ('Milk').
All hail Queen Meryl!

Pathé U.K. has released the first official still from 'The Iron Lady,' in which two-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep will tackle the role of Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female prime minister.

According to the press release, via Coming Soon, the movie began filming on Jan. 31, and co-stars Jim Broadbent ('Iris') as Thatcher's husband, Denis.

The film will also re-team Streep with her 'Mamma Mia!' director, Phyllida Lloyd, though as far as we can tell, 'The Iron Lady' will not include any songs by ABBA.

In the press release today, Streep had this to say about the role: "The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge. I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses -- I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!"

We're breaking down all the Oscar contenders for you, so that you can decide whether you want to see them -- or at the very least, be able to hold your own at cocktail parties. Next up: 'The Fighter,' based on the true story of boxer Micky Ward and his family.

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director (David O. Russell), Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams and Melissa Leo), Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing

What It's About: 'The Fighter' follows the rise of Massachusetts-born boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his quest to become junior welterweight champion. His success is encouraged -- and hindered -- by his eccentric family, which includes his crack-addicted brother (Bale) and his overbearing mother (Leo). Along the way, Micky meets a beautiful, no-nonsense bartender (Adams) who helps him to realize the things in life that are worth fighting for.

Why You Should See It: Bale delivers an inspired performance as former-boxer-turned-drug-addict Dicky Ecklund, and his astonishing physical transformation earns him best-in-show honors. Adams and Leo also balance the movie with different, but equally impressive, performances -- Leo as the showy, outspoken mother, and Adams as the subtle, supportive girlfriend. And holding the movie together is Mark Wahlberg, who gives one of his best, most understated performances to date.

It's Kind of Like: 'Rocky' meets 'The Sopranos'

After much hype and a myriad of big-name casting announcements, speculation is forming today that Aussie director Baz Luhrmann may drop out of 'The Great Gatsby.'

The news comes direct from Lurhmann's rep, who told Sydney Confidential that "Baz is currently in Los Angeles ensuring all the creative and fiscal elements are in place to give 'Gatsby' everything it requires. Whether this is possible or not, he will know by the end of the week or early next week."

If the project falls through, Lurhmann's added that "the front-runners for his next creative venture are his New York-based musical film or the live version of 'Strictly Ballroom.'"

According to the report, the production has had its share of hiccups since it was first announced.

As we previously reported, Leonardo DiCaprio has already signed on to play the role of Jay Gatsby. And after a lengthy search, Lurhmann chose Oscar-nominated actress Carey Mulligan to take on Daisy Buchanan, beating out a slew of candidates ranging from Blake Lively to Scarlett Johansson to Natalie Portman.

There were also reports that Luhrmann was considering shooting 'The Great Gatsby' in, of all things, 3D.

Tell us: Should Luhrmann stay on the project? Or is it time for him to let it go?

If you ever wanted to see 'TRON: Legacy' beauty Olivia Wilde stripped down to a barely-there dress, well, your dreams are about to become reality.

Wilde, who can also be seen in this year's 'Cowboys and Aliens,' is just one of the many young actors to grace Vanity Fair's annual Hollywood Issue. Joining Wilde are 'The Hurt Locker''s Anthony Mackie, 'Black Swan' hottie Mila Kunis and Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg ('The Social Network').

Still, the revealing shot of Wilde wasn't enough to get her on the actual cover of the issue. That honor went to three men and a lady: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco.
Other actors included in the pull-out cover are Andrew Garfield, Garrett Hedlund and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

And in a bit of a humorous twist, the magazine also included one old-schooler: Robert Duvall, who can be seen playing the role of the bartender. To say that we envy the Oscar-winning legend would be a bit of an understatement.

According to PEOPLE, the Oscar-winning actress has dropped plans to appear in the upcoming 'Valentine's Day' sequel 'New Year's Eve' to prepare for a custody battle for her 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Nahla.

"Halle has serious concerns for her daughter's well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time and is prepared to take all necessary steps to protect her" her rep said.
Berry split from the baby's father, 35-year-old model Gabriel Aubry, in April.

It looks like McG may be returning to the small screen.

According to TV Line, the 'Terminator: Salvation' director is reportedly in talks to helm the 'Wonder Woman' TV pilot from Emmy-winning writer/director David E. Kelley. The show received a last-minute pickup order on Friday.

This would put McG in familiar territory, as he not only directed the 'Chuck' pilot, but was also the man behind the hit 'Charlie's Angels' franchise, in 2000 and 2003.
McG's other credits include 'We Are Marshall,' in 2008, and the 'Fastlane' pilot, in 2007.

His latest movie, 'This Means War,' in which hunky actors Tom Hardy and Chris Pine, well, pine after Reese Witherspoon, is scheduled to hit theaters later this year.

'Wonder Woman' first hit big on the small screen in the '70s, with Lynda Carter in the title role. The show ran for three season on CBS.
Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman, in the upcoming Batman movie 'The Dark Knight Rises,' according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Oscar nominated actress, who starred in last year's 'Love and Other Drugs,' will take over the role that Michelle Pfeiffer made legendary in 'Batman Returns' and Halle Berry made infamous in 'Catwoman.'

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. also confirmed that hunky actor Tom Hardy will play Bane.

"I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies," director Christopher Nolan said in a statement.

As much as we love the Oscars, when it comes to awards season, nobody does it better than the Golden Globes. It's the one time of year when the stars of both movies and television get all dressed up to hand out a few awards and throw back a few drinks.

Think about it: Is there a better combination than awards and alcohol? Not that we're proponents of excessive drinking, but if there's one thing we love most about the Globes, it's the way it feels more like a party than a stiff, four-hour-long awards show. (Sorry, Oscars.) Where else can you watch Isaac Mizrahi inappropriately touch Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet, or Renee Zellweger win an award while she's still in the bathroom? It's the best party in showbusiness. (Relive more memorable Golden Globes moments here.)

It's also the most unpredictable. Because it's the first major awards show of the year, nobody really knows what's going to happen, which often leads to a number of surprise upsets. Remember when Natalie Portman won in 2004? Or James Franco in 2002? The Golden Globes is about as predictable as the jokes from host Ricky Gervais.

Because Moviefone loves the Golden Globes so much, we'll be bringing you the most comprehensive coverage on the Internet this Sunday, from red carpet photos to fashion snark to live updates on Twitter to the best and worst moments from the telecast.

And for those of you who can't wait until Sunday, Moviefone has already kicked off its 2011 coverage. Think you know who's going to win?
That Movie EXISTS?!: 'Hollywood Hills 90028,' Starring 'Real Housewives' Alum Bethenny Frankel

I consider myself to be pretty well versed in the subject of 'Real Housewives.' I know all of the words to Kim Zolciak's 'Tardy for the Party'; I've tasted Bethenny Frankel's Skinnygirl Margarita; I even interviewed one of the stars from the franchise last year.

So you can imagine how surprised I was when my co-worker brought 'Hollywood Hills 90028,' a low-budget movie from 1994 starring none other than Ms. Frankel, to my attention. I didn't know anything about it -- what it was about, if it hit theaters, how it even got made it in the first place. The only thing I knew was, I needed to see it right away; and a few days later (thanks, eBay!) I had my very own copy on DVD, ready to be screened in all of its glory.

As you might expect, the plot of the movie is relatively simple: a new girl -- Laura Drake (Frankel) -- shows up at a local high school and catches the eye of Mike, a nerdy kid with a big heart and an even bigger alcoholic father. At first, everyone is smitten with Laura -- that is, until people start getting murdered. Naturally, Mike's friends become suspicious of Laura (she's the new girl, after all) and, naturally, she turns out to be a raging sociopath.

Of course, if you've seen the movie -- and I imagine so many of you have -- you'll know that last bit of plot I just revealed isn't much of a spoiler. In fact, when we first meet Laura, we see her crushing an innocent white flower in her bare hands. That alone should give you an idea of how subtle the movie's script is.

Still, it takes a little while for the murders to start happening. Our first victim: mean, old Mr. Cross, an English teacher who spends his hours yelling at and complaining about his low-life students. One day, he berates Laura for not having read the assigned play (which he has a right to be mad about, if you think about it), and when Mike snaps back, he gets sent to the principal's office with 20 points off his GPA. A few scenes later, Mr. Cross is hacked to death by a weird gardening tool. We suspect it might be Laura, and when we find out her parents died in a freak gardening accident (her words) a few scenes later, our suspicions are confirmed.

From then on, anyone who double-crosses Mike is put on death watch. This includes Mike's alcoholic father, who, like Mr. Cross, is such a bad actor, seeing him go turns out to be the best thing that happens in the movie.

Meanwhile, Laura, who is clearly a sexual person (in one of her first run-ins with Mike, she randomly and aggressively puts her leg in his lap), finally consumates her relationship with Mike; they have a long and awkward sex scene in his waterbed (!) that makes the pool scene in 'Showgirls' actually look hot.

This is when things start to get weird. Now that she's unofficially "claimed" her man, you'd think she'd devote all of her sexual attention to Mike. But no, Laura decides to go after everyone in Hollywood, including one of Mike's girlfriends, whom she invites over to sunbathe on her roofdeck that has a view of -- you guessed it -- the famous Hollywood Hills sign. In this scene, Laura bullies the friend into taking off her top (Bethenny takes hers off, too, FYI), then plants a kiss on her. The friend freaks out and goes into suspicion overload, and from then on, Laura's days are numbered.

(Side note: How it took this long for people to grow suspicious of Laura is beyond me. Her parents died in a freak gardeining accent (again, her words), yet she's still living in some fabulous house with a view of the Hollywood Hills sign? If you ask me, these characters deserved what was coming to them.)

Things only get worse for Laura when said topless girlfriend discovers her journal, which is conveniently lying on a shelf above the waterbed. In the journal, Laura details all of her vicious crimes, as if she was asking to get caught. Well, caught she is, though luckily for Laura, she still has time to get a few more murders in, including Mike's father.

When Mike discovers the body, Laura admits to everything. It was all in the name of love! she claims. Now they can finally be together! Mike, of course, isn't happy, and when Laura pulls out a gun, the two enter into a struggle. Before you know it, Laura is shot and dead on the floor of Mike's house. The madness is finally over.

The film ends with a flashback of Mike and his friends walking through the halls of their high school, looking happy and peaceful. Ah, those were the days.

So just how bad is 'Hollywood Hills 90028'? Objectively, it's 72-minute a disaster, with more plot holes and bad acting than even I was expecting. Still, it isn't anything different from the B-movies that were made in the late-'80s and early-'90s. (In one scene, for example, you can't even hear the dialogue, because the sound coming from the car they're driving is too loud.) If anything, 'Hollywood Hills 90028' underwhelming. It's campy, sure, but if you're looking to laugh at some truly trainwreck moments, you're better off just watching an episode of 'The Real Housewives of New York City.'

As for Bethenny's acting, it actually isn't that bad. She's surprisingly less -- how do I put this lightly? -- energetic here than she is on 'Real Housewives' (one might say stiff), but there have been worse performances captured on camera (which, as a camp enthusiast, makes me a little sad to report).

Still, after seeing the movie, I think it's pretty safe to say that the 'Bethenny Getting Married?' star won't be getting an Oscar anytime soon.

Though, if you can believe it, 'Hollywood Hills 90028' didn't kill her acting career altogether; according to her IMDb page, Frankel had a role in the 1995 movie 'Wish Me Luck,' about a genie who apparently turns a nerd into a man (whatever that means). Could this be the beginning of a That Movie EXISTS?! follow-up? If it's any bad as 'Hollywood Hills 90028,' probably.
David Fincher and Darren Aronofsky were among the five men nominated by the Directors Guild of America this afternoon, solidifying their status as Oscar frontrunners.

The 'Social Network' and 'Black Swan' helmers will compete against Tom Hooper ('The King's Speech'), David O'Russell ('The Fighter') and Christopher Nolan ('Inception') for the award, which will be handed out on Jan. 29.

Among the snubs were Danny Boyle, for '127 Hours,' and the Coen brothers, who are currently riding the box-office wave with their biggest hit ever, 'True Grit.'

The Directors Guild of America has often been viewed as the most accuracte Oscar predictor.

'Blue Valentine' Sex Scene: Is it Really That Controversial?

Much has already been said about the so-called controversial sex scene in 'Blue Valentine,' which infamously landed the movie with an NC-17 rating that was eventually reversed.

With 'Blue Valentine' hitting theaters on Wednesday, we're taking a closer look at the movie, about the highs and lows of a marriage over five years, to determine just how controversial the scene really is, and whether it actually deserved its NC-17 rating. (The short answer: No.)

What happens in the scene?
During a high point in their relationship, Dean (Ryan Gosling) performs oral sex on his wife, Cindy (Michelle Williams), in a passionate scene that was filmed in one shot. The sex is mutual -- unlike a previous scene in the film, in which Dean tries to make love to his wife on the floor of a low-brow motel, all in an attempt to save their marriage.

Was its NC-17 rating justified?
No. The scene is certainly raw, but it fits in with the overall mood and tone of the story. Nothing about it is shocking or explotative; if anything, it's a little sad, given the low points we've already witnessed in their marriage. In fact, viewers may be surprised by how uncontroversial the scene actually is, especially if they've already seen 'Black Swan' (more on that here).

Is the movie still for adults-only?
Yes. The film's frank depiction of love, sex, marriage and the struggles that come with it is definitely geared towrads the adult crowd. And while the sex scenes may be uncontroversial to some, it's still an R-rated movie, which means you should definitely call a sitter if you're thinking about seeing it.

Beyond the sex scene, what will people be talking about?
If you're unsure whether you want to see 'Blue Valentine,' you may want to consider the Oscar-worthy performances by Gosling and Williams. Here is a rare case in which two young actors are at the top of their game, acting in a story that is honest, emotional and real. You won't want to miss two of the best performances of the year, especially if they are nominated in January.

Today, ballots will be sent out to members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, allowing them to make their picks for the 2011 Oscar nominations (announced Tue., Jan. 25).

By now, most of the frontrunners have already been determined, from 'The Social Network' in Best Picture to Christian Bale ('The Fighter') in Best Supporting Actor.

But just in case there are a few undecided voters out there, we're highlighting six under-the-radar films and performances we think deserve nominations.

Check them out after the jump.

Best Picture: 'Winter's Bone'
Say what you will about the expansion to 10 Best Picture nominees. Yes, it made room for a few questionable nominees last year ('The Blind Side,' anyone?), but it also highlighted movies that otherwise never would have had their moment in the spotlight -- films like 'District 9' and 'A Serious Man.' This year, we're hoping the spotlight will go to 2010's best indie, 'Winter's Bone,' which stars Oscar favorite Jennifer Lawrence as a poor teenager in search of her missing father. The movie was every bit as well-acted and executed as blockbusters like, say, 'Inception,' and if the Academy were to name it one of their 10 best movies, it would prove that the newly expanded field actually works.

Best Director: Debra Granik ('Winter's Bone') and Lisa Cholodenko ('The Kids Are All Right')
After Kathryn Bigelow made history in March by becoming the first female to win Best Director, you'd think it would open the door for more women to be nominated in this category. But for whatever reason, 2010 is looking to be a return to the boys' club, with expected nominees ranging from David Fincher, to Christopher Nolan to Darren Aronofsky, among other men. Which is a little sad, because two of the year's best films -- 'Winter's Bone' and 'The Kids Are All Right' -- were directed by women. Granik and Cholodeno carried on the torch in 2010 with two beautifully crafted indies, and given their strengths beind the camera, deserve to be recognized among the higher profile movies like 'The Social Network,' 'Inception' and 'Black Swan.'

Best Actor: Jim Carrey, 'I Love You Phillip Morris'
After getting snubbed twice in the late-'90s, for 'The Truman Show' and 'Man on the Moon,' it seems likely that Jim Carrey will never be nominated for an Academy Award. But if voters are still feeling guilty about it, they could always make it up to him by nominating his performance in the subversive and wildly funny movie 'I Love You Phillip Morris,' in which he plays a con-man determined to be with his boyfriend (Ewan McGregor), whom he met in prison. It's the type of wacky -- but mature -- performance we haven't seen Carrey deliver since 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,' in 2004, and reminds us all why we fell in love with his spot-on comedic skills in the first place. Now if only the Acadmey would fall in love with him, too.

Best Actress: Tilda Swinton, 'I Am Love'
Back in November, film critic Roger Ebert tweeted, "No Oscar voter should DARE to nominate for Best Actress without seeing Tilda Swinton in 'I Am Love'" -- and he's absolutely right. In 'I Am Love,' Swinton is at the top of her game, playing a Russian immigrant who marries into a wealthy Italian family, and later, has an affair with her son's business partner. It's a tour-de-force from an actress who has contributed some of the best performances in the last 10 years, and if voters actually see movie, there's no way they can justify overlooking her. (Yep, she's that good.) Besides, after last year's painful snub, they owe it to her.

Best Supporting Actor: Armie Hammer, 'The Social Network'
'Social Network' co-star Andrew Garfield should have no trouble getting nominated here for his sympathetic performance as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. But if voters really "liked" the movie, they'd make room for Armie Hammer, as well, who played the hunky Winklevoss twins so well, most people didn't realize it was the same actor in both roles. Hammer stole every scene he was in with memorable one-liners ("I'm 6'5", 220 and there's two of me!"), and since the movie's release, he's caught the eye of some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Clint Eastwood, who recently cast him in his upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic. A nod for Hammer's star-is-born performance could kick-start what already appears to be a successful movie career in the making.

Best Supporting Actress: Barbara Hershey, 'Black Swan'
No offense to Mila Kunis, who was wonderful in 'Black Swan,' and seems to be well on her way to earning an Oscar nomination in this category. But if any of the movie's female supporting players deserves to be nominated, it's Barbara Hershey, who so deliciously played Natalie Portman's 'Mommie Dearest'-esque stage mom in the movie. As the caring -- but mostly terrifying -- Erica Sayers, Hershey kept us all on our toes (the cake scene?), and played the villain in a way that was both scary and funny -- but never over the top. If anything, her performance served as a sad reminder that Hollywood just doesn't use enough of her these days.
