'Top Gun' in 3D IMAX: A Live Blog

| Posted 02.05.2013

On Tuesday afternoon, I attended a screening of Top Gun presented in 3D and IMAX (well, the fake IMAX that's not quite as big as the real IMAX, but it costs the same amount). In my life, I would guess I've seen Top Gun around 15 times. Though, I can't remember the last time I really paid attention to Top Gun. Top Gun makes great background noise while one pays his bills, naps or surfs for Internet porn. (I am not admitting to any of those three things.) Anyway, to mark this occasion, watching Top Gun on the big screen, I kept a diary of my experience.

'Identity Thief': Will This Movie Make You Stupid? (And 24 Other Urgent Questions)

| Posted 02.06.2013

On Friday, a very bad movie called Identity Thief opens in theaters. If you happen to live near a theater showing Identity Thief (a likely scenario), you may be tempted to exchange hard-earned money for a ticket, especially if you enjoy the work of Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. This is a valid reason to be tempted, but -- if so -- may God have mercy on your soul. As a service to you, we answered every question that you couple possibly have about Identity Thief.

Han Solo Movie: 10 People Or Things That Should Not Play Han Solo

| Posted 02.07.2013

On Wednesday, the internet exploded with the news that Disney is reportedly in preliminary discussions to make standalone Star Wars movies focusing on, respectively, Boba Fett and a Han Solo. Since the Han Solo movie is believed to take place before the events of Episode IV, the part will have to be recast with a new actor. Names as wide ranging as Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Garrett Hedlund to Taylor Kitsch have been suggested. At this point, it might be easier to just list the 10 people or things that should not play the young Han Solo. Here is that list:

'SNL' Scorecard: Justin Bieber's Show Was All About Justin Bieber

| Posted 02.10.2013

The entire show was about Justin Bieber -- and "SNL" is at its worst when the show is about the host as opposed to the host integrating him or herself into the cast.

'A Good Day To Die Hard': The Inexplicable Invincibility Of John McClane

| Posted 02.13.2013

Now, in A Good Day to Die Hard, there's a scene about 45 minutes into the movie in which McClane (along with his son, played by Jai Courtney, whom I did enjoy in this role) finds himself, once again, in a high-rise building. A helicopter is firing bullets into the room that the McClanes are in, so McClane and his son run at top speed toward the windows, break through, and jump into infinity. The two then crash though scaffolding at a high rate of speed (scaffolding that it's hard to believe they were aware existed), eventually falling into a chute of some kind and then landing safely on the ground without harm. McClane didn't think twice about this decision; there was no anguish at the thought of dying. He didn't even bother looking for a fire hose to swing from.

Remember This? Bruce Willis' Singing Career

| Posted 02.15.2013

As a society, we love Bruce Willis (even if his current film, A Good Day To Die Hard, is going to test that love a bit), which is why, as a society, we have conveniently forgotten Willis' foray into the recording industry. In 1987, Willis was a year away from true international stardom with Die Hard, but he was still an extremely popular man due to his work on the television show Moonlighting. That was the year he released his album, The Return of Bruno.

'Safe Haven' Ending: Let's Talk About That Crazy Denouement

| Posted 02.17.2013

Let me start by saying that I am not at all disappointed with my decision -- the ending was just as bizarre as advertized. Though, I'm fairly certain my fellow audience members who were there to see a well-constructed story do not share my sentiments. Walking out, I overheard a woman who looked to be in her late 60s ask her husband, "Can you believe it was that bad?" (In response, he shrugged.)

'SNL' Scorecard: Christoph Waltz Hosts The Best Show Of The Season

| Posted 02.17.2013

Christoph Waltz was fantastic, which resulted in the best SNL of the season. Waltz is the type of actor who can do almost anything and it felt like there was a lot of saved up material, just waiting for a host that could do almost anything.

Do Not Kill Han Solo In 'Episode VII'!

| Posted 02.20.2013

George Lucas was right. It would have been a mistake to kill Han Solo in Return of the Jedi (which almost happened), and it would be a mistake to kill him in Episode VII, no matter how much Harrison Ford may want that to happen.

'Dark Skies': An Ill-Fated Attempt To See A Midnight Screening

| Posted 02.22.2013

On Thursday night, I purchased a ticket to the midnight showing of Dark Skies (along with fellow movie-writing folk Matt Singer and Jenni Miller) at the AMC Loews Village 7 in Manhattan's East Village. Dark Skies is the story of ... well, I still have no idea, to tell you the truth. If you must know, perhaps there's a nice summary on its Wikipedia page. Yes, I tried to see Dark Skies early on Friday morning, but things did not go smoothly. Along the way, I kept a running diary of what happened.
