The boy may be able to fly, but will the movie take off?

The first trailer for "Pan" hit the internet today and it's drop-dead gorgeous. The visuals are breathtaking — from the flying ship above to the lush Neverland scenery to the kooky costumes.

Peter (newcomer Levi Miller) is an orphan who's kidnapped by the pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) to a fantastical land. There, he also meets Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who believe he's the answer to an ancient prophesy that foretells the defeat of the pirates. Other than those broad strokes, it's hard to get a real sense of the movie. It veers from earnestness to mystical mumbo-jumbo. It definitely wants you to feel like it's the next "Harry Potter" with the orphan setup, the entrance into an amazing new world, and fantastical creatures — Peter is The Boy Who Can Fly, rather than The Boy Who Lived.

"Pan" opens in theaters October 9.
