It's already been established that Paul Feig's upcoming "Ghostbusters" flick will be more of a reboot than a remake, using the original film as a jumping off point to feature new characters and tell new stories. But it turns out that Feig is seeking inspiration for that fresh story from an unlikely source.

In an appearance on "Talking Dead," the "Walking Dead" discussion show, Feig told host Chris Hardwick that the AMC zombie drama was a big help to him and screenwriter Katie Dippold in prepping the project.

"I will say, I was very inspired by this show," Feig told Hardwick. "What I love is how they play with the danger, they play with the scariness, but also the idea that it's always about gauntlet run. And that's something, an element I want to bring to this 'Ghostbusters' reboot is having to get through these various obstacles that are supernatural and all that. I really feed off of 'The Walking Dead.'"

It's strange that a show that takes itself so seriously could partly inspire a comedy, though Feig has said in the past that he wants his reboot to be "scarier than the original." And while its dramatics could use some help, "The Walking Dead" has always excelled at horror, so Feig taking a cue from those elements makes sense.

"Ghostbusters" stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. It's slated for release on July 22, 2016.
