"The Boxtrolls" is based on the Alan Snow novel "Here Be Monsters!" and is co-directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi. It concerns a fictional, vaguely Victorian town in England that is menaced by Boxtrolls -- inquisitive little trolls that dig through the town's garbage. (They think they're up to no good, and the town hires an evil exterminator, played by Ben Kingsley, to rid them of their adorable pests.) The main character is a young orphan named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright from "Game of Thrones"), who grew up thinking he was a boxtroll. Now he's got to go above ground to save his friends -- and convince the world that the boxtrolls aren't bad at all.
In the teaser, which we eagerly watched at Comic-Con a couple of weeks ago, you get a sense of the visual ingenuity on display in "The Boxtrolls" and can catch a glimpse of the supporting cast of characters, which includes Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Tracy Morgan, and Simon Pegg. This is some next-level gorgeousness on display, with each prop and costume immaculately constructed for the maximum wow-factor. (Trust us, we've seen the sets and noticed how painstakingly precise everything is.) This is going to be a very special film indeed -- full of out-of-control humor and genuine moments of hushed wonder.
"The Boxtrolls" premieres at the end of the month at the Venice Film Festival (you have no idea how badly we wish we were going!) and will be everywhere on September 26th.
