Sylvester Stallone and his titular gang are back for more mayhem, this time at the hands of the villainous Conrad Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson. When Stallone turns to Wesley Snipes and says, "Great to have you back," we can't help but think he's talking to the audience, too.
And based on the fact that this is now the "Expendables" franchise's third outing, the intended audience is probably pretty pleased to see Stallone and co. again, too. The fact that he's now brought in Gibson, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, and Kelsey Grammer, too, probably doesn't hurt.
Fans used to the "Expendables" formula will find familiar territory here -- namely, the aforementioned venerable action stars kicking ass and cracking wise, while also poking fun at their increasingly advancing ages. The trailer includes plenty of those moments, which also serve as handy exposition.
"You were stupid enough to get yourself into this mess; we're the only ones crazy enough to get you out of it," Jason Statham screams to Stallone during one scene. That seems to sum up the film's plot nicely.
"The Expendables 3," which also stars Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzanegger, Kellan Lutz, and Victor Ortiz, opens on August 15.
