This is the next logical step of the live action retelling of classic Disney fairy tales thing that has been going on in the studio for a little while now: next year the Disney Channel will premiere its newest original movie "Descendants," which envisions what the children of some of Disney's fiercest villains would grow up to become.
According to Entertainment Weekly, which premiered the first photo, the unnecessarily complicated plot of "Descendants," which, it should be noted, has nothing to do with the Oscar-nominated George Clooney film, follows: "the kingdom's worst baddies have been exiled to the Isle of the Lost, a remote prison cut off from the world. After 20 years, Ben-the son of Belle and the Beast, and heir apparent to the throne-makes his first proclamation to free the children of the villains and offer them redemption." Okay.
The photo showcases Mal (Dove Cameron), Jay (Booboo Stewart), Evie (Sofia Carson) and Carlos (Cameron Boyce). Jay is definitely Cruella de Vil's son, but the others are sort of nebulously punky and I'm sure part of the movie will be the reveal of who these kids belong to, so there's that to look forward to. According to the EW report, they'll mix and mingle with the children of Disney heroes, as well, including Mulan's daughter Lonnie, Cinderella's son Chad and Dopey's son Doug. No word yet on whether or not this will crossover with "Once Upon a Time" and the Disney fairy tale universe will explode like a peep in the microwave.
Somewhat more interesting are the adult actors who play the various villains, including Kristin Chenoweth as Maleficent (move over, Angelina!), Kathy Najimy as the Evil Queen, Maz Jobrani as Jafar and Wendy Raquel Robinson as Cruella de Vil. Boom.
Look for "Descendants" on the Disney Channel sometime next year.
