The director announced that Sigourney Weaver will be part of the three follow-up films to "Avatar," a move that undoubtedly confuses fans since her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in the blockbuster original.
No, Grace isn't being resurrected or reborn. Rather, Cameron says in a statement, Weaver is "playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We're both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration."
Weaver isn't the only returning actor with a confusing new role. Stephen Lang, who played the villainous Col. Quaritch, is back as well, in some fashion.
Could their consciousnesses somehow have been stored somewhere? Maybe some of Grace's mind was left inside the Tree of Souls? Maybe they both have twins out there?
Weaver and Lang join "Avatar" castmates Sam Wellington and Zoe Saldana. The first sequel will hit theaters December 2016.
