disney princess leiaDisney got itself into some hot water recently after the first wave of casting for "Star Wars: Episode VII" featured very few female characters. Now, the Mouse House is doing damage control once again after a group of Princess Leia fans noticed that Disney stores weren't stocking any merchandise featuring the sci-fi heroine.

After Disney acquired "Star Wars" from George Lucas back in 2012, the entertainment giant began capitalizing on the well-known brand by selling a variety of products featuring Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader, and other "Wars" characters. But notably absent was Leia -- a character much more recognizable than a stuffed bantha, as The A.V. Club points out -- and when British film vet Natalie Wreyford took to Twitter to ask Disney Store brass why, she was given a swift brush-off. That answer didn't sit well with Wreyford, and after the media caught wind of the brouhaha, Disney suddenly -- and rightly -- changed its tune.

"The current assortment of Star Wars products at the Disney Store launched earlier this year, and is just the beginning of what is to come," Disney spokeswoman Margita Thompson told TIME last week in response to the uproar. "We're excited to be rolling out new products in the coming months, including several items that will feature Princess Leia, one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars galaxy."

Whether that was Disney's plan all along or a swift course correction is unclear (we're thinking the truth is closer to the latter), but we're glad that the company is finally starting to understand the popularity of one of the most important female sci-fi characters of all time.
