Long before Johnny Depp trashed a hotel room and Shia LaBeouf made headlines for fisticuffs, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood were being celebrated by fans for their portrayals of tough gunslingers and grisly macho men. They laughed in the face of danger and skillfully handled their business, man-style.
Nowadays, badass heroes aren't limited to the male of the species. Hollywood has since opened its doors (narrowly) for tough heroines, like Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, in "Alien" (1979). And Ripley paved the way for today's crop of heroes, led by Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games"
