Melissa McCarthy, who is about as gifted a physical comedienne as we can remember, can simply appear on screen and turn even the most stone-faced moviegoer into a giggling hysteric. Such will be the case when the teaser for "Tammy" debuts in theaters this weekend. The trailer explains absolutely nothing about the actual movie, but it's so outrageously funny that we can't help but think it will be one of the better summer movies this year.
The trailer features star and co-writer McCarthy getting out of a junky car and dancing, in slow motion no less, to Coolio's immortal "Gangsta's Paradise." McCarthy then robs a fast food joint, bumbling and making jokes the entire time. It is hysterical. It's the kind of trailer that is wonderfully elliptical, to the point that you think, "Well, whatever that is, I want in."
(Just to be clear, the official synopsis from the studio has McCarthy losing her job and finding out that her husband was unfaithful, which sets her off on a road trip with her alcoholic grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon, and they run into all sorts of trouble along the way.)
"Tammy" was co-written and directed by McCarthy's husband, the very funny Ben Falcone, and costars Allison Janney, Toni Collette, Gary Cole, Sandra Oh, Dan Aykroyd, and Kathy Bates. The movie, which was co-produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, opens on July 2, 2014.
