Russell, who directed Lawrence in the recently-minted Golden Globe winner "American Hustle," was speaking with the New York Daily News at the Australian Academy's AACTA Awards last Friday in Los Angeles about the actress's commitment to "The Hunger Games." Lawrence has been hard at work shooting the four films in the series over the last few years, and Russell made the unfortunate choice to allude to fellow Globe-winning film "12 Years a Slave" in discussing her obligation.
"I'll tell you what it is about that girl -- Talk about 12 years of slavery, that's what the franchise is," Russell told the Daily News. "And I'm going to get in so much trouble for saying that."
No kidding. Unsurprisingly, those comments didn't go over well, and now Russell is apologizing for his offensive attempted joke.
"Clearly I used a stupid analogy in a poor attempt at humor," Russell said in a statement. "I realized it the minute I said it, and I am truly sorry."
