There were a lot of big question marks going into this year's Golden Globe Awards -- Who would take home the top prizes? What would people be wearing? Who knew she was pregnant? But one aspect of the awards show that was pretty much a given was that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were going to knock 'em dead in their sophomore outing as the awards show's hosts. The unnecessary cruelty of Ricky Gervais now in the distant past, this is the era of the friendly (but not toothless) female host.

And, for an awards show free of drama or pretty much anything else that could be classified as "interesting," it turns out that their surefire hilarity was the obvious highlight of the night. Almost every joke they delivered was a gut-buster, although it must be said that it would have been nice to see more of them. In the Ricky Gervais era, it seemed like he was always hanging around the periphery, drink in hand, ready to lob some grenade right at a table full of beautiful millionaires. With Amy and Tina, it felt like they had to fight for every joke. Maybe that struggle enhanced the comedy.

1. The Monologue This isn't a surprise, considering the start of the show also allows for the biggest comedy download of the night. Amy and Tina didn't disappoint either. Their wonderful, totally sharp, utterly fearless monologue was undeniably the highlight of the night. From Amy mispronouncing Tom Hanks's name to Fey announcing that the original title of "American Hustle" was "Explosion at the Wig Factory," to a lengthy discussion of the year in prosthetic penises, it was all comedy gold. And what's more -- they reminded us that they were able to deliver these jokes with the barbed edge of hardened feminists. When they made the joke about "Gravity" being about George Clooney floating away into space to get away from a woman his own age wasn't just hilarious, it was deeply, keenly observant and sort of profound. It made for the rare monologue that made you think as well as piddle your pants with laughter. In movies-from-2013 terms, it was equal parts "After Tiller" and "Anchorman 2."

2. International Journalists

Yes, the Hollywood Foreign Press is a weird and morally nebulous group, but what's really important is that they're full of international journalists with weird names. Amy and Tina reminded us of this very important fact, and made a "V.I. Warshawski" reference in the process. Priceless.

3. Introducing 'Randy'

Every year there is a Miss Golden Globe, a pretty face that is the offspring of two other pretty faces. This year it was Sosie Bacon, the daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. As the proud parents were earnestly introducing their daughter, Tina shoved them aside and announced that "in the name of gender equality," she would introduce Mr. Golden Globe, her son from an earlier failed marriage, Randy. Randy, of course, was Amy in a Justin Bieber wig, who sullenly protested his involvement in the ceremony. Then things got weird: Randy wanted to figure out who in the room is his biological father. "Is it him?" Randy asked, pointing to Idris Elba. It was another gender-bending scream from the ladies and a reminder of how very different the awards show would have been had some straight white guy hosted instead.

4. Mean Drunks

Gags about how drunk the hosts of the Golden Globes are is a time-honored tradition, but Amy and Tina took it to the next level, mostly because they were hoisting golden goblets. Also, they tried to get nasty. But of course, since it was Amy and Tina, it still felt kind of sweet. Sorry ladies.

5. Amy Wins

With all the talk about her hosting duties, it was easy to forget that Amy was also a nominee. When her name was called as a nominee for Best Actress in a Comedy (Television), she was seen getting a back rub from Bono, having seemingly finagled her way into the "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" table. When she actually won, she promptly made out with Bono. Or at least that's what it looked like to the viewers at home. As much of a shtick as it was, Poehler seemed genuinely surprised. It was a wonderful moment -- as hilarious as it was heartfelt.

6. Tina's Michael Bay Joke So, this is a relatively minor moment but it still made me giggle: Tina Fey made fun of Michael Bay's recent petulant appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show, where he stormed off the stage after his teleprompter malfunction. By the reaction in the room, it seemed like there were only a handful of people in the room who had watched the hilarious online video. But hey. That's OK. It still felt like a wonderfully acidic attack on the macho male Hollywood machine.
