The clip begins with a military leader instructing a group of soldiers (including Aaron Taylor-Johnson), about to jump from a plane and descend upon Godzilla ravaging a city, "Your courage will never be more needed than it is today." Ominous music swells as the group takes flight, sweeping through dark clouds as shown from Taylor-Johnson's character's POV until we're right up next to the beast. And then the screen goes dark.
It's a clever ploy by filmmakers to leave audiences hungry for more, and declining to fully reveal Godzilla in all his glory certainly does the trick. The rest of the teaser amps up the destruction caused by the giant lizard -- there's plenty of nifty special effects involving obliterated high-rises and airborne military assaults -- lending some surprising seriousness to the premise of a mutant dinosaur wreaking havoc on humanity.
Count us in to see how it all plays out. "Godzilla" roars into theaters May 16, 2014.
