Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey, we presume? Marcia Gay Harden has signed on for the role of Christian Grey's mom in the adaptation of EL James's "Fifty Shades of Grey," which is currently filming in Vancouver.
Those of us who haven't been surreptitiously reading the series on our Kindles might be surprised to find out there are characters in the book other than Anastasia Steele and Grey. As production has kicked off, we're learning there are all sorts of people who exist outside of Christian's Red Room of Pain. One of these individuals is Dr. Grey, a pediatrician who initially treated Christian as a child after his biological mom killed herself. He'd been alone with her body for days, has nightmares about her, and refers to her as a "crack whore," which is all pretty charming. What, Dr. Grey couldn't find him a good shrink?
Dr. Grey is also the subject of her own fan fiction, which is like, fan fan fiction? Or something? The mind boggles. Google at your peril.
Marcia Gay Harden joins Jamie Dornan (Christian), Dakota Johnson (Ana), and a whole slew of other actors in tertiary roles. The lingering question is who will play Dr. Grey's friend Elena Lincoln, aka Mrs. Robinson, aka the woman who has an "affair" with the underage Christian and introduces him to BDSM.
Harden has recurring roles on "Trophy Wife" and "The Newsroom," and will appear in Woody Allen's "Magic in the Moonlight," among other upcoming projects.
