In "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and the rest of his merry band of misfit dwarves finally make their way to the mountain where Smaug (voiced and performance-capture-performed by Benedict Cumberbatch) is trapped, amid all his gold and treasure. While we were very sternly warned not to talk about the movie, we can say that the interaction between Bilbo and Smaug is easily one of the insanely enjoyable film's biggest highlights.
When "Pacific Rim" filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct "The Hobbit," he described his version of Smaug as resembling "a flying axe." As you can see from the illustration in the video, the final design didn't stick to that concept at all, instead following a pretty traditional model of what you would imagine a dragon would look like.
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" arrives on December 13.
