Over the summer, at Disney's D23 Expo, a kind of Comic Con for the Mouse House, they debuted the very first footage from "Maleficent," the ambitious, incredibly expensive redo of "Sleeping Beauty" told from the witch's perspective. And what's more, Maleficent herself, Angelina Jolie, was on hand to produce the footage. In short: the footage looked pretty nuts. While a trailer has yet to hit, the teaser poster (below) has debuted, and it is truly awesome.

The poster features Jolie's Maleficent, turning her head in a chilling tilt, with her trademark horns soaring above her head. You can tell that this is just how Disney is going to market it. There are five words on the entire poster: Angelina Jolie, Disney, Maleficent, Summer. This is already poised to be a huge event and the subtlety of the poster is evocative of this.

Based on the footage, it looks like a dark, trippy romp. Directed by first-time filmmaker Robert Stromberg, who was a production designer on "Avatar," "Oz the Great and Powerful," and "Alice in Wonderland," the footage was evocative without explicitly giving anything away. You see glimpses of iconic "Sleeping Beauty" moments, including the fluttering fairies and the cursed sewing needle, plus Jolie unleashing a truly hellish cackle.

"Maleficent," which costars Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, alongside Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple, Sam Riley, Miranda Richardson, Imelda Staunton, and Lesley Manville, opens May 30, 2014.Maleficent poster
