The magic of technology has brought Tolkien fans a lot of joy over the years, by way of Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" films. Last night, technology brought fans together with Jackson and the stars of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" for a special event that took place simultaneously in cities around the world.

Fans, some in costume, snagged some cool freebies before heading into select movie theaters in various cities to watch a 20-minute preview, a new trailer, and live feeds of Jackson and the "Smaug" stars chatting about their upcoming sequel. Orlando Bloom and Richard Armitage appeared in NYC, while Jackson showed up shoeless in Wellington. Lee Pace, Andy Serkis, and Luke Evans tuned in from London, and Evangeline Lilly showed up at the Los Angeles event. The main Hobbity man, Martin Freeman, showed up in a prerecorded clip because he was probably off being awesome with Benedict Cumberbatch or something. They also got a look-see at the video blog Jackson kept during filming, which would make a very cool DVD extra for some future releases.

Although the 20-minute clip that Jackson et al presented at the fan event isn't available online, a brand-new trailer for "The Desolation of Smaug" is! And you can watch it here. Of course, it heavily features the stars that appeared at the fan event, plenty of bow-and-arrow action, epic landscapes, and one giant fire-breathing dragon.

Check out the new trailer above. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" will open on December 13.
