Earlier this month, del Toro orchestrated a "couch gag" for "The Simpsons'" annual Halloween episode that was, simply put, jaw dropping. It was del Toro's personal history through horror and it was an undeniable hoot. Now, in one of those cosmic coincidences, a "Hobbit"-specific "Simpsons" couch gag has followed del Toro's gag. It goes without saying that he had nothing to do with it.
The gag starts out with a hilarious map of Middle Earth that includes Springfield, Disneyland area Critter Country, Funkytown, and, of course, the James L. Brook. The rest of the gag consists of lots of walking and a fair amount of decent jokes. Marge is Gandalf, Moe is Gollum (of course), Burns is Smaug and Lenny, Carl, and Barney are giant trolls (who turn into stone when the sun hits them). It's pretty cute. We just kind of wonder what a couch gag would have looked like had it been based on a "Hobbit" del Toro had directed.
