Back at the D23 Expo this past summer, which is kind of like the all-Disney version of Comic Con, one of the unexpected highlights was the presentation of footage from "Muppets Most Wanted," the forthcoming sequel to 2011's somewhat middling "The Muppets."
After the lackluster, kid-friendly trailer of "Muppets Most Wanted" that was attached to "Planes," we were bracing for the worst. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the hilarious footage shown at D23, which included a musical number with Ricky Gervais as the henchman for a villainous Kermit doppelganger. Now a new poster, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, promises all sorts of international fun from the film, which is set to debut this March.
In the film, Kermit is kidnapped and replaced by his double, Constantine, who has a ridiculous accent and designs to steal an enormous diamond (he's seen on the poster with a bad-guy mole and a Dr. Evil-style pinky lift). Ty Burrell plays the Interpol agent hot on his trail and Tina Fey is a Russian prison guard. Many of the behind-the-scenes talent from the first film are back for "Muppets Most Wanted," including the Oscar-winning songwriter Bret McKenzie, co-screenwriter Nicholas Soller, and director James Bobin.
Cameos for the new film are supposed to include Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Salma Hayek, Ray Liotta, Frank Langella and Tom Hiddleston. We talked to Hiddleston a few weeks ago and asked him about his role (the interview will run next week). He said that filming a scene with Kermit was one of the highlights of his career. Amazing.
Seriously, the footage at D23 was amazing, so even if this poster doesn't do it for you (ugh, why is Walter, the most boring Muppet of all time, back?), just know that it will deliver. Big time.
Check out the poster below. "Muppets Most Wanted" "takes the world by farce" on March 21.
