mr peabody and sherman new trailerDreamWorks

If something like "The Smurfs," which was based on a dated and largely unpopular animated series from the past, can spawn a franchise worth hundreds of millions in box office and merchandising, it stands to wager that the new DreamWorks Animation adaptation of "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," from the old "Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," can do the same. Based on the new trailer, things are looking pretty good.

Based on the "Peabody's Improbable History" segments of "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," the movie has genius inventor dog Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell from "Modern Family") scurrying around with his adopted human Sherman (Max Charles) to fix the course of human history after Sherman and his classmate, Penny (Ariel Winter), jump in the WABAC machine and mess things up royally.

The trailer is cute and features a bunch of funny historical gags, which hopefully bodes well for the finished film, which opens March 7. DreamWorks Animation is an entirely uneven studio –- for every "Croods"-style success we're blessed with, we're conversely punished with an unforgiving dud like "Turbo." Hopefully this is one of their better offerings. Rob Minkoff, who directed "The Lion King," handled directorial duties for "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," while longtime Tim Burton confederate Danny Elfman handles the score. Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Allison Janney, Mel Brooks, Stanley Tucci, and Lake Bell round out the cast.

Hey, if "The Smurfs" can translate to today's audiences, chances are "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" can too. Check out the trailer below.
