If you were lucky enough to attend this year's San Diego Comic-Con or Disney's D23 Expo, you were privy to some pretty spectacular footage from the Marvel sequel, footage that told us we were in for a "Captain" of a very different scale. We're happy to finally see that hugeness make its way into the first trailer.
At Comic-Con, we talked to a trio of the installment's stars -- Emily VanCamp (Agent 13), Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow / Crossbones), and Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson / The Falcon) -- who hinted at how "Winter Soldier" would differ from 2011's "The First Avenger" -- and other Marvel movies.
"...It's not really good versus evil. It's two sides of an idea, and that's where it veers away from the other films that I've seen, the Marvel movies specifically," Grillo said. "So, it really is a bit of a departure." Cryptic, no?
Exactly how much of a departure remains to be seen. But if this trailer is any indication, it's a welcome one. The first "Captain America," while mostly positively received by critics, was met with indifference from fans of the comic who complained that it focused too much on action sequences and too little on the shadowy political-conspiratorial elements that make the character stand out in the Marvel universe.
And what about that titular Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan? Well, we're impressed with what we've seen so far, a sentiment that VanCamp echoed back in July. "I saw a picture in the makeup trailer the first day we started working, and I thought it looked pretty incredible," she said of Stan, after seeing him in all his Winter Soldier glory.
See a (hopefully) different kind of superhero movie when "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," starring Chris Evans (and Robert Redford!), explodes into theaters on April 4, 2014.
