Although "City of Bones" disappointed at the box office, production company Constantin has decided that the fan base is strong enough to warrant spending cash on a sequel.
"The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going... It's been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles," Constantin's Martin Moszkowicz said.
However, "City of Bones" did have some significant changes from the book that might have turned off fans. Author Cassandra Clare supported the film and the changes made by director Harald Zwart and his team, but was also clear about her feelings on the matter. She told the Los Angeles Times in August, "I think fans are going to like it. The characters look right. The interactions between the characters look right, the settings look right. But there are book purists out there, and they want everything the same. It's a lot for Harald to take in.... But there are pieces of the world-building that I love that they couldn't fit into the story. It's called 'Mortal Instruments,' but you are only introduced to one. I miss the other instruments."
Perhaps fans did too. In any case, all indications point towards the studio rethinking not just its marketing strategy but also "the script, casting [and] style" of the sequel. Production will kick off next year, so while it's safe to assume that its stars and director will return, schedule changes can always complicate things – as can rejiggering the entire project. Stay tune, "Instruments" fans. We'll keep you posted as things develop in this "City of Ashes."
