Monsters vs. robots, round 2?

"Pacific Rim" director Guillermo Del Toro confirmed that he's writing a sequel (we'll call it "Pacific Rim 2") to his sci-fi summer blockbuster -- though it has yet to get a green light for production.

Promoting the Blu-ray release of "Pacific Rim," Del Toro told IGN, "We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that's definitely above my pay rate."

A green light seems very probable considering "Pacific Rim" raked in $400 million worldwide. Though it wasn't as big in the U.S. as the studio wanted it to be, the sci-fi action flick fared very well overseas -- which is a major determining factor in getting movies made these days.

Not only that, but "Pacific Rim" was this year's highest-grossing live-action movie based on new intellectual property. Meaning, it wasn't a sequel or adaptation. Successful new stories with sequel potential don't grow on trees. And Del Toro noted that fans of "Pacific Rim" are truly fanatic about it.

"To me, what was beautiful and flattering was how people saw the movie not once or twice but three, four times or more," Del Toro said.

"People that love it, love it with great passion. So I would love to continue telling stories about that world."
