In a profile on the magazine's website, writer Tom Chiarella waxes philosophic about Johansson, hinting at the reasoning behind her selection.
"Her voice is a raspy frequency in the air. Legitimately as pertinent and defining a component of her physical makeup as her lips, her cheekbones, her legs. When you're with her, you feel that voice," Chiarella writes. " ... Scarlett is a politically astute, card-playing, magic-loving smart-ass, fairly generous in her time and attentions, a woman who will share her sandwich, a woman who likes horsing around in a bar on a muggy afternoon."
For her part, Johansson told Esquire she was honored to be the only woman to be declared sexiest twice, joking that she's "gotta hustle" at this point in her career.
"I'm a 28-year-old woman in the movie business, right? Pretty soon the roles you're offered all become mothers," she said. "Then they just sort of stop."
