Mark Darcy is dead.

Helen Fielding, British author of the wildly popular "Bridget Jones's Diary" and its sequel, "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," said that the upcoming third book in the series, "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy" will begin with a tragic event: the revelation that Darcy died in a car accident five years earlier. Bridget and Darcy did get married and had two children, reports the U.K.'s Sunday Times, but now 51-year-old Bridget is a singleton once again, navigating motherhood and "rediscovering romance with a toy boy while obsessing about her Twitter followers as well as her weight and wrinkles."

So how does this news affect Colin Firth, who played Darcy in the "Jones" films? It's hard to say.

Cinema Blend points out that a third "Bridget Jones" movie has been in the works since at least 2009, long before Fielding's shocking revelation, and had been rumored to closely follow the events after "Edge of Reason," when Darcy proposes to Bridget. A working title for the project on IMDb calls the film "Bridget Jones's Baby."

Cinema Blend also notes that series star Renee Zellweger is nowhere near 51, so picking up the third book's plot for a film to be produced in the next few years seems unlikely. Then again, so does the likelihood that the movie is happening anytime soon: Working Title Films's last update about the project suggested it would shoot by the end of 2012, but that never happened. Perhaps "Bridget Jones 3" is as dead as Darcy.

Despite the grim prognosis for his character, Firth said earlier this year that delays in filming didn't mean filmmakers were giving up on the project -- but audiences shouldn't hold their breath.

"Unfortunately, it might be a bit of a long wait," Firth told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I wouldn't say that it's completely dead in the water, but the way it's going you might be seeing Bridget Jones' granddaughter's story being told by the time we get there. ... There is a joy of doing those movies that keeps hope alive. And the story is going in an interesting direction. I just wouldn't say that the movie is imminent."
