Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro in 'Grudge Match'Warner Bros.

If there's one role that Sylvester Stallone will always be associated with, it's underdog boxer Rocky Balboa. So it's somewhat surprising to see the actor lace up his boxing gloves once more for "Grudge Match," a movie that doesn't involve his beloved Rocky but instead sees him playing a new character who gets back in the ring to resume a decades-long feud with another aging boxer ("Raging Bull" Oscar winner Robert De Niro).

Back in the heyday of their rivalry, Stallone's Henry "Razor" Sharp and De Niro's Billy "The Kid" McGuigan never got around to duking it out in a tie-breaker. So when they're offered a ridiculous sum of money to return to the ring years later, they deliver an epic grudge match.

The movie looks like a solid mixture of rock'em-sock'em boxing action and "hey, aren't these guys old?" jokes, which is fine by us. Less certain are the movie's dramatic undercurrents (De Niro wants to reconnect with his long-lost son, and we're not sure what Stallone's deal is), but overall it looks pretty rousing, and not just because the trailer features a pump-your-fist-in-the-air Macklemore & Lewis song.

Quite frankly, Stallone could be doing laundry in his boxing shorts and gloves and we'd probably buy a ticket. The actor is scheduled to reprise his role as Rocky in "Creed," an upcoming film from the "Fruitvale Station" duo of director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan, which would focus on Apollo Creed's grandson. Now that is going to be awesome.

Also starring Kim Basinger, Alan Arkin, Kevin Hart, and Jon Bernthal, "Grudge Match" opens on Christmas Day. So take the old-man boxer in your family.
