Before "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James revealed on September 2 that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson would play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the upcoming movie adaptation of her bestselling erotic novel, pretty much all of Hollywood had been floated as possible contenders for the nudity-prone roles.

Now, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter, a few of the many names thrown out as being in the running weren't too far off-base. THR reports that Ryan Gosling was the "original prototype" for Grey, a 27-year-old billionaire and BDSM aficionado, but he passed -- as did "TRON: Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund.

Hunnam, 33, ultimately scored the plum part, and thanks to his role as hottie biker Jax Teller on "Sons of Anarchy," he has plenty of experience embodying a bad boy on-screen.

Over on the other half of the central "Fifty Shades" pairing, early Anastasia favorite Shailene Woodley apparently couldn't fit the project into her busy schedule. THR reveals that while Felicity Jones, Alicia Vikander, Imogen Poots, and Elizabeth Olsen were also considered for the role, they all came up short against 23-year-old Johnson, who most recently starred on the Fox sitcom "Ben and Kate."

THR adds that Hunnam and Johnson's chemistry read sealed the casting deal. The two are signed to do the full(-frontal) trilogy.

From director Sam Taylor-Johnson, "Fifty Shades of Grey" is sure to steam up the big screen when it hits theaters August 1, 2014.
