Despite her burgeoning post-"Secret Life of the American Teenager" movie career, Shailene Woodley isn't your typical Hollywood starlet. The 21-year-old actress, who earned rave reviews in this summer's "The Spectacular Now" and has a little YA franchise called "Divergent" kicking off next spring, eschews the glitz and glamor in favor of living closer to nature.

"I think everything about my lifestyle is fairly alternative," she tells Flaunt magazine. "I gather my own spring water from mountains every month. I go to a farm to get my food. I make everything from my own toothpaste to my own body lotions and face oils. [Laughs] I could go on for hours. I make my own medicines; I don't get those from doctors. I make my own cheese and forage wild foods and identify wild plants. It's an entire lifestyle. It's appealing to my soul."

Evidently not in it for the fame, she's concerned about her growing profile in the acting world, which will be further bolstered by her role -- as a teenager with cancer -- in the upcoming adaptation of bestselling YA novel "The Fault in Our Stars."

"Now I feel like there's this odd sort of obsession with certain people," she says. "So, for me, I try to separate myself from my project; and I hope that people support that project. But when people are solely supporting me, it feels odd; it's something that I haven't quite gotten used to and I don't think I ever will."

Even though she didn't exactly enjoy being locked into a TV show for multiple seasons (ahem, "Secret Life"), she ultimately decided to take the plunge into a multi-film deal for "Divergent," in which she'll get her action star on as Tris Prior. "I was extremely passionate about the character, and about the project," she says. "I thought that it was worth it to sign on to do another series."

"Divergent," directed by Neil Burger and based on the Veronica Roth trilogy set in a future dystopian Chicago, hits theaters March 21, 2014.
