After endless rumors and speculation -- not to mention many cryptic, conspiracy-fueling tweets from Sylvester Stallone -- an official synopsis and cast list for "The Expendables 3" is finally here.

Lionsgate issued a press release Monday announcing that production had already begun on the film in Bulgaria, and that the premise would pit Stallone's Barney Ross against his onetime friend-turned-foe Connor Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson. On a mission to take Stonebanks down, Ross recruits new -- and younger -- faces to the Expendables crew, enlisting the help of characters played by Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell. Also rounding out the new (if not younger) additions are Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, and Antonio Banderas.

But the release is perhaps most notable for its omissions, namely of some big-name stars who were purportedly cast in the movie but are now missing from the lineup. Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, and Milla Jovovich were all reported to have been circling parts in the film at one point, and Stallone had also teased Mickey Rourke's involvement. Cage had already publicly denied his participation, but what happened to the rest? Perhaps, like Bruce Willis before them, they proved too expensive for the production.

"The Expendables 3" is expected in theaters August 15, 2014.
