Update, 8/20/13: According to Vulture, the trailer is for J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst's equally mysterious upcoming novel, "S."

Original story: J.J. Abrams has released a cryptic and creepy teaser trailer for a new project from his Bad Robot production company that is as mysterious as the characters it portrays.

Abrams sent the video to Entertainment Weekly, but declined to elaborate on whether the clip was promoting a movie, TV, or web project. Judging by its chill-inducing coda, we're guessing the director's secrecy is an intentional marketing tool.

So how does it look? Well, it's hard to say. The clip, simply titled "Stranger," is narrated by an old man and focuses on another, who's depicted drenched at water's edge, struggling to walk through the surf.

"Who is he?" the narrator asks, before teasing, "Soon, you will know."

The answer can't come soon enough. We'll probably have that horrifying face (you'll know it when you see it) haunting us until then.
