Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines," which stars Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, and Bradley Cooper, is a sprawling, multigenerational crime saga whose intricacy and scope border on the novelistic. In short: It's a lot of movie.

In fact, it was once too much movie, which is why Total Film has rescued a deleted scene that somehow didn't make it into the final cut -- one in which Gosling strips down to his underwear. They're briefs, ladies and gentlemen. Blue briefs.

The entire clip, which runs more than three minutes, has a chilling air of authenticity, in keeping with Cianfrance's commitment to naturalism. The sequence follows Gosling's character, a motorcycle stunt driver in a traveling carnival who turns to a life of crime, as he is arrested and processed, and it's during this processing that the guards order Gosling to remove his shirt and pants.

Presumably so we can all ogle his heavily tattooed torso ... among other things. Just because there's a whole lot of movie in "The Place Beyond the Pines," doesn't mean we can't use a little more.

The way that Gosling's criminal activities have an impact for years to come is the gist of "The Place Beyond the Pines," but revealing any more would give away some of the thrill of watching the movie unfold in its singularly sprawling, curlicue manner. It's out on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow.
