Between last year's "On the Road" and this year's "Kill Your Darlings," a new subgenre is emerging -- one in which hot young actors are cast as influential members of the Beat Generation.
While "On the Road" wasn't so hot, a trailer for the much, much more compelling "Kill Your Darlings" has debuted, in truncated form, giving us a taste of the upcoming drama. The movie, which stars Daniel Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Huston as Jack Kerouac, Ben Foster as William Burroughs, Dane DeHaan as Lucien Carr, and Elizabeth Olsen as Edie Parker, centers on the arrest of Kerouac, Burroughs, and Carr for murder, and their subsequent acquittal.
The trailer, for reasons that are beyond us, is only 30 seconds long and arbitrarily cuts off at what seems like a third of the way through. But before its abrupt end, it showcases the zippy camerawork and screw-the-system attitude that are, indeed, large parts of the movie.
"Kill Your Darlings," an embarrassment of riches that never tries to beat you over the head with its cleverness, opens in limited release on October 18 and hopefully won't get lost among all the big-time Oscar contenders.
Get ready to dust off your beret and start snapping.
