Spike Lee is taking a cue from Zach Braff and "Veronica Mars," and has begun a Kickstarter campaign to help finance his new movie.
Currently working under the title "The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint," Lee says he is seeking $1.25 million for the project, which is about "the addiction of blood."
"There's a lot of sex in it, too," the director adds in a video message on the Kickstarter page.
Lee said he was inspired by the success of "Veronica" and Braff's campaigns -- which raised $5 million and $3.1 million, respectively, earlier this year -- and acknowledged that while he has had success making big-name films like "Malcolm X" and "Do the Right Thing" in the past, using crowdfunding is necessary in Hollywood today.
"It's a very different climate now," the director said. "The only way to ensure as an independent filmmaker that your vision is on the screen is that you bring the money to the table."
Noting that his first feature, 1985's "She's Gotta Have It," was shot in 12 days for $175,000, Lee said that that scenario could never play out in the modern studio system. That's why he's turning to his loyal fans for help in getting his latest project into theaters, he said, as a way to fight through all the sequels and superhero movies that are dominating the multiplexes.
Rewards for backers range from $5 for a thank-you tweet from the director to $10,000 for a night out with Lee, where he'll take the lucky backer to dinner, and then as his courtside companion to a New York Knicks game.
"This is a motherf*cking tough business, and I'm gonna keep fighting the powers that be," Lee said.
