Universal is so sure that audiences will love the still-months-away "Ride Along" that the studio has already greenlit a sequel. So does the Ice Cube-Kevin Hart buddy cop flick look like it deserves a follow-up?
Based on the first official teaser, the answer is a toss-up. The clip sets up the story of a security guard turned police academy enrollee played by Kevin Hart, who desperately wants to marry his girlfriend. The only catch is that her hardened older brother, an Atlanta police veteran played by Ice Cube, hates him, privately referring to Hart as a "man Smurf."
Hart needs Cube's blessing before he can pop the question, and Cube has a solution.
"I'm gonna take you on a ride along," he tells Hart. "You've got one day, and one day only, to show me what you've got."
Naturally, Hart isn't quite prepared for the tough police work that follows, though with that sequel waiting in the wings, we can't help but think that things work out between him and Cube. No word on when its follow-up will be released, but "Ride Along" is set to hit theaters Jan. 17, 2014.
