Pierce Brosnan's daughter Charlotte passed away Friday afternoon after a long battle with ovarian cancer -- the same disease that claimed her mother, Cassandra Harris, in 1991 when she was still married to Brosnan.
"On June 28 at 2 p.m. my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer," Brosnan said in a statement.
"Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity," he continued. "Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences."
The 41-year-old mother of two was surrounded by her husband, her children, and her brothers when she died.
Given that Brosnan has now lost two loved ones to cancer, his latest role hits painfully close to home: The 60-year-old actor plays a widower dating a woman fighting cancer in the 2012 Danish film "Love Is All You Need."
In a March interview with the Daily Mail, he recalled his mourning period in the wake of Harris's untimely passing. "I went through it all, very publicly," Brosnan said. "Such things draw a mark across your heart and it's always a part of your life. To watch someone you love have their life eaten away -- bit by bit, by this insidious and horrid disease -- becomes an indelible part of your psyche."
Brosnan adopted Charlotte, one of Harris's two children from a previous marriage, after their father died in 1986. He also has one son from his marriage to Harris and two sons with wife Keely Shaye Smith.
