The idea of the "Expendables" movies, in which a ragtag band of action stars both old and new (mostly old) are assembled for one grandiose ass-kicking extravaganza, is always more fun than actually watching an "Expendables" movie. That said, the sequel was a vast improvement on the original, and with a new rumor revealed today, the third film could be something to get legitimately jazzed about. ShowBiz 411 (via Movies.com) is reporting that Mel Gibson is being courted to play the villain in "The Expendables 3." Yes, please.
The third feature, which should reunite most of the stalwarts from the previous installments (series mastermind Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, etc.), has added some color to the new cast with recent announcements that newly freed Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage, Milla Jovovich, and Jackie Chan were set to co-star. Perhaps even more exciting is the news that Australian director Patrick Hughes, who directed the terrific and tragically under-seen thriller "Red Hill," will be helming the new film.
Gibson being involved could take things to a whole new level, though. The actor, who has experienced some trouble getting work after a string of personal embarrassments, is poised for a comeback. He'll co-star in this fall's "Machete Kills" as a villain looking to launch nuclear missiles from space, and his bizarre, nearly direct-to-video action movie "Get the Gringo" is poised for cult film rediscovery.
While this "Expendables 3" news is still considered rumor (other actors who have been informally attached to the project during development include Clint Eastwood, Steven Seagal, and Harrison Ford), it's still enough to get pumped about. Maybe with the third "Expendables," Stallone and company will make a movie even cooler than it sounds.
The new film will be released on August 15th, 2014. Prepare thyself.
