At the "Iron Man 3" premiere, Whedon teased some plot details about the hotly-anticipated sequel, telling a reporter that "two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act, [are] in the movie." Marvel fans know that there are few sibling duos in the comic universe, leading to speculation that the pair is none other than Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
The fraternal twins are featured as early members of the Avengers in the comics, with Scarlet Witch possessing the power to cast hexes to manipulate probability and Quicksilver possessing superhuman speed. The twist is that the characters are also mutants -- they're the children of Magneto -- and first appear in the X-Men mythology as villains before becoming heroic members of the Avengers.
Whatever Whedon's plans, he could wind up being second in line to feature the duo. While Disney controls most Marvel creations, Fox still holds the rights to the X-Men characters, meaning Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are fair game to both studios and could wind up appearing in Bryan Singer's upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past" before "The Avengers 2" debuts.
"X-Men" is set for a July 14, 2014 release date. "Avengers 2" should arrive May 1, 2015.
