"Flight"

Nominated For: Best Actor (Denzel Washington), Best Original Screenplay

What's it About? Denzel plays William "Whip" Whitaker, an unstable airline pilot who likes to indulge in a drink (or four) plus a few lines of cocaine before flying. However, when the flight he's on encounters a mid-air emergency, Whip springs to action and pulls off a risky move that helps save everyone on board. After landing, questions arise over the captain's sobriety -- and whether he was the one behind the plane's malfunction.

Why You Should See It: Denzel Washington is one of the most consistent actors working today. In "Flight," Washington plays against type, as an alcoholic, drug-abusing airline pilot on the verge of self-destruction. It's both a fascinating and terrific performance by the two-time Oscar winner, who carries the film from beginning to end. Also, the first 15 minutes of the movie are some of the tensest in recent big-screen memory. They may also make you never want to fly again.

It's Kind of Like: The beginning of "Cast Away" mixed with lots of booze, drugs and the Rolling Stones.
