Weekend Box Office: 'The Hobbit' Wins With $84.8 Million

By JAKE COYLE   12/16/12 05:34 PM ET EST  AP

NEW YORK -- Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" led the box office with a haul of $84.8 million, a record-setting opening better than the three previous "Lord of the Rings" films.

The Warner Bros. Middle Earth epic was the biggest December opening ever, surpassing Will Smith's "I Am Legend," which opened with $77.2 million in 2007, according to studio estimates Sunday. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" also passed the December opening of "Avatar," which opened with $77 million. Internationally, "The Hobbit" also added $138.2 million, for an impressive global debut of $223 million.

Despite weak reviews, the 3-D adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's first novel in the fantasy series was an even bigger draw than the last "Lord of the Rings" movie, "The Return of the King." That film opened with $72.6 million. "The Hobbit" is the first of another planned trilogy, with two more films to be squeezed out of Tolkien's book.

While Jackson's "Rings" movies drew many accolades – "The Return of the King" won best picture from the Academy Awards – the path for "The Hobbit" has been rockier. It received no Golden Globes nominations on Thursday, though all three "Rings" films were nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for best picture.

Particularly criticized has been the film's 48-frames-per-second (double the usual rate), a hyper-detailed look that some have found jarring. Most moviegoers didn't see "The Hobbit" in that version, though, as the new technology was rolled out in only 461 of the 4,045 theaters playing the film.

Regardless of any misgivings over "The Hobbit," the film was a hit with audiences. They graded the film with an "A" CinemaScore.

"What's really important, what makes this special is the CinemaScore," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. "All these things point to a great word of mouth. We haven't even made it to the Christmas holidays yet. Kids are still in school this week."

The strong opening culminated a long journey for "The Hobbit," which was initially delayed when a lawsuit dragged on between Jackson and "Rings" producer New Line Cinema over merchandizing revenue. At one point, Guillermo del Toro was to direct the film with Jackson producing. But eventually the filmmaker opted to direct the movie himself, originally envisioning two "Hobbit" films. The production also went through the bankruptcy of distribution partner MGM and a labor dispute in New Zealand, where the film was shot.

The long delay for "The Hobbit," nearly a decade after the last "Lord of the Rings" film, made it "one of those movies that had everyone scratching their heads as to how it would open," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"It's been a decade since the `Lord of the Rings' trilogy concluded," said Dergarabedian. "There's been so much anticipation for this film and having Peter Jackson back at the helm just made it irresistible both to fans and the non-initiated alike."

"The Hobbit" was far and away the biggest draw in theaters, with no other new wide release. Paramount's "Rise of the Guardians" continued to draw the family crowd, with $7.4 million, bringing its cumulative total to $71.4 million. The Oscar contender "Lincoln" from Walt Disney crossed the $100 million mark, adding another $7.2 million to bring its six-week total to $107.9 million. And Sony's James Bond film "Skyfall," with another $7 million domestically, drew closer to a global take of $1 billion.

The box office continued to be on the upswing and with anticipated releases like "Les Miserables," "Django Unchained" and "The Guilt Trip" approaching in the holiday moviegoing season. Dergarabedian expects the year to break the 2009 record of $10.6 billion. With some $10.2 billion in revenue thus far, he said, "We're on track to be in that realm."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," $84.8 million ($138.2 million international).

I've seen it, and I'll see the next one (this one covers at most half of the book). I do not understand what the critics disliked--it seems like a better film to me, than the Lord of the Rings films. Tastes differ, of course.

This movie was mediocre at best with very dull moments for the first hour and a half . The only reason this movie made any kind of money was the curiosity overt he Lord Of The Rings movies. For those saying you should not compare the Hobbit to the LOTR movies is nuts because this takes you back to the beginning where the ring is first acquired . I agree with the movie critics on this one and give it a 2 out of 4 or for those that pay attention to Rotten Tomatoes or the Meticritic scores for movies a 65 out of 100% . It had long periods where it was literally putting the audience to sleep and some were actually getting up and leaving the theater. The scene with the Eagles flying and the Gollum scene was kind of funny , other than that it was a virtual snooze fest .

i have not yet seen this movie, but i understand those who say you shouldn't compare it to lotr, due to the source material... i've read all four books dozens of times, and the book themselves are not comparable... "the hobbit" was written as a children's book; lotr was not... the scope of lotr, the genre, the wide range of characters and races, the series of actions that affect all of middle earth - none of this is present in tolkien's first tale...

of course, i'll have to actually see the movie before i can judge, but i've bee skeptical ever since i heard there would be 3 of them... there's just not enough material there...

However , if you go to see the Hobbit you will find that it is related to LOTR series because it is the beginning of that series. It is directly related because it shows where the ring was found and how the Hobbit's got involved with the ring in the first place. Anyone who says they are not related after seeing the Hobbit is totally crazy as in the beginning it shows the Hobbit from LOTR as he is being told the story of how it all began.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but plan to. My comment is about the article building up hype over the ticket sales in dollars. Let's talk number of tickets instead of dollars. Because of rising ticket prices over the years, the dollar amount is not a valid comparison for movie popularity. The press does the same thing with natural disasters to make them sound more destructive, you can't sensibly compare damage in dollars from 1950 to 2012.

Great Movie!!

Maybe it was just the theatre I saw it in or my old ears HA! but at the beginning during Bilbos story of Smaug attacking Erebor the music/noise was louder than the narration, besides that and Bilbo not encountering the goblins on his way out of the cave where he lost his buttons in the book instead of squeezing between rocks escaping Smeagol it was GREAT!!! PJ and his crew did the book justic once again.

As I was watching the movie, there were a couple of times that I was just shaking my head and thinking, what in the world is Jackson doing? I won't say anymore so as not to spoil anything for those who have not seen it yet. Still loved it.

happens in so many films... sometimes i'm embarrassed by how loud i have to play my tv - it's not that i can't hear it, i just can't hear the d@mn dialogue because the music's so loud...

Research into Tolkien he was a christian and the Hobbit and the TRILOGY are tales of good versus evil.

Well! "The Hobbit" part I was everything I expected and more. I have to say that it took some time to get used to the High Resolution format but it was a bold and well prosecuted production by Mr. Peter Jackson. If you are not ready to see so much clarity in a film I would not recommend it. But if you are up to treat all of your senses, take a chance and judge for yourself!!! =o) JR

It's got a bigger take because movie ticket prices keep going up and up, more so for IMAX versions.

I have to grudgingly give the producers kudos for knowing how to make money (and honestly, that's exactly what it's all about) stretching this out into a three-part film, knowing that people are going to pay through the nose for all three films regardless of how lousy the reviews are. Much like the Star Wars episodes 1-3 did.
02:18 PM on 12/17/2012
Except that this is a far better movie than Star Wars Episode I...which just wasn't good.

Your tripping , this movie is nowhere near as good as Avatar and is mediocre at best .
04:52 PM on 12/17/2012
avatar may have been a great movie experience, but it wasn't a great movie... i don't care how well a movie is made, if you haven't got a great story, you haven't got a great movie...

big business vs. the treehuggers? been there, done that....

I enjoyed all the LOTR films and also the books. But this film is probably nothing like the book. The book was so boring it took me a week to read because I kept falling asleep.
07:28 PM on 12/16/2012
People need to stop comparing LOTR to the Hobbit and they won't be so dissapointed. LOTR is an adult's book, the Hobbit is a children's book. I think Mr. Jackson did a fap-tastic job! The orcs and goblins looked awesome. The scene with Bilbo and Gollum was eerie. And the dwarves brought the same smile to my face as it did when I was a child. The cinematography was beautiful and the acting specially Bilbo and Serkins was delightful. And Galadriel...sigh

But you have to compare the LOTR with the Hobbit as they are directly connected and the Hobbit takes you back to the beginning of LOTR much like the Star Wars movies did. The Hobbit takes you back to when the Ring was first acquired and is totally related to the LOTR movies in every way.
04:56 PM on 12/17/2012
related does not mean comparable... the source material was two completely different genres, children's fairy tale vs. adult fantasy.... it's not even a fine line, i don't understand why you don't get it - have you read the books?
