UPDATE: A release date has been announced for "The Avengers 2." It is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2015. As MTV points out, the film likely won't be ready until then due to the number of Marvel films being planned prior to an "Avengers" follow-up, included "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Thor: The Dark World" and "Guardians of the Galaxy."

EARLIER: Very good -- and very unsurprising -- news: Joss Whedon will be writing and directing "The Avengers 2."

After earning the highest opening of any film ever, Disney announced that a sequel is underway, saying that the film "is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much."

Apparently, a sequel was in the bag long before Whedon confirmed that he'd be back directing "Earth's mightiest heroes."

"I have not come to a decision on directing 'Avengers 2' yet," Whedon said during this year's Comic-Con. Now, in additon to signing on for the big-screen sequel, he will also participate in Marvel and ABC's related television project.

Hulk smash, indeed.
