'The Dark Knight Rises' Box Office: On Top For Third Straight Week

Batman Wins Box Office

CHRISTY LEMIRE   08/05/12 03:20 PM ET  AP

LOS ANGELES — "The Dark Knight Rises" topped the box office for the third week in a row, making $36.4 million this past weekend.

The finale in Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy has now made nearly $355 million domestically alone, according to Sunday estimates from Warner Bros.

"Total Recall," starring Colin Farrell in a new take on the thriller that provided Arnold Schwarzenegger with one of his best-loved actions roles in 1990, opened in second place with $26 million, Columbia Pictures said.

And the Fox family comedy "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days" debuted at No. 3 with $14.7 million.

Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said he wasn't surprised by the film's strong showing in its third week; it only dropped 41 percent compared to the 43-percent drop in week three that "The Dark Knight" experienced in 2008. He also said the film is getting back on track to perform at its expected pace following the opening-night shooting in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 dead and 58 others injured.

"The support from audiences across North America has been outstanding," Fellman said. "The movie speaks for itself, and the unfortunate tragedy that took place hurt everyone. We're obviously very moved by the events that took place."

"The Dark Knight Rises" has now set an IMAX record, he said, with nearly $48 million of the film's gross coming from the large-screen format. Nolan shot more than 40 percent of the film in IMAX with the intention of having it projected that way.

Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, said he was surprised that "The Dark Knight Rises" held so well in its third week.

"It was the clear runaway favorite. I thought it would be a race for the No. 1 spot with `Total Recall,'" he said. "`The Dark Knight' is rising above the fray and word of mouth is just tremendous on the film and people keep going back to see it."

Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution, said "Total Recall" opened close to the studio's high-$20 million estimate. But it was also No. 1 in many of the dozen international markets in which it opened, including India, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand for a total of $6.2 million. It expands to Europe and Latin America in upcoming weeks.

Farrell stars in this version of the futuristic Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" as a man who struggles to piece together his memory after he discovers the life he's been living is a fabrication. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel co-star.

"The thing about `Total Recall' is that it's always been made for the world stage, and we're off to a good start opening in smaller markets this week," Bruer said. "Overall when you consider this movie was made for such a reasonable price ($125 million), for the scenario of what we got, we've opened really well. I think we're going to be very pleased with the result."

Also this week, the Universal Pictures comedy "Ted" made an additional $5.5 million to cross the $200 million mark domestically; it also had a huge weekend internationally, taking in $32 million. "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane directs for the first time and provides the voice of a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear who's the lifelong best friend of Mark Wahlberg's character.

"It's very, very R-rated but it's the quintessential word-of-mouth movie," Dergarabedian said. "You see it and you've got to take your friends to see it so they can believe what you're saying."

Estimated ticket sales were for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Dark Knight Rises," $36.4 million. ($67 million international.)

The talents of Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are wasted on this film and their characters are left with not much to do. There is also a remarkable lack of Batman in this "Batman" film. ~ blackwhiteplanet _℃om ~~~~~ is for thousands of upscale men and beautiful women, who understand that ambition, success, and glamour are key elements of attraction. It's worth a try! "The Dark Knight Rises" is simply standard pop movie fodder, however grandly presented. But timeless, relevant cinema this is not.

In my opinion, besides the comics themselves, the best iteration of Batman remains "Batman: The Animated Series" and the best Batman movie remains "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm".

Wait, the end of Nolan's Trilogy beat Len Wiseman's campy, poorly-reviewed remake?

Guess that must mean TDKR is the best movie ever made.

I havent watched a R rated movie then rented one the other night. It was redicoulus. I dont see how that passes as entertaiment. I dont want to see this any more than I would want to watch a theater full of peopel get shot up.

Not quite sure what you're getting at. So if a movie is rated R it isn't entertaining? You realize "Rises" is rated PG-13 and is pretty much without a single drop of blood. People all over the world watch violent movies and play violent video games and don't go around murdering people.

I saw the move (TDKR) and I left it really liking and cheering for Bane more than Batman. Catwoman's storyline could have used an extra 15 minutes and didn't really add to the movie IMO. Anne Hathaway was just ok. I would say that Catowman could use a reboot but I think Halle Berry ruined that forever.

It mirrors tail of two city's (the novel). It gives you more suited batman than the other two and is possibly more of a drama than an action movie. The movie is very good.

Really? I thought "Rises" was about as much of a drama as the "Transformers" movies....

no doubt its popular....that is where society lives nowadays...in a fantasy world..young people have no grounding or connection to reality.......it will make them easier to take over when the time comes...for now...its party on as usual.....

Dude, relax. People have been living in fantasy worlds since the dawn of time. Ever heard of The Epic of Gilgamesh or the Odyssey? Yes, I think most young people these days have horrible taste in art and culture and the quality of this film can be debated because it really isn't that great but do you really think people will just stop watching/reading fiction after 5,000 years?

that a super not smart and cryptic thing to say, very naive and bleak world view

It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The start of the movie is long and pointless. Themiddle of the movie is muddled, and it seems like they shot the movie without a script. The end of the movie was anti-climatic, and the scene where the girl finally dies after talking for 5 or 10 minutes, was the absolute worst. A two year old can fake dying better. $24 for two tickets! What a waste of money.

I don't care what you call it. The movie is bad. It is so obvious that the buildings are just painted cardboard. The cinematography is poor. The music is dull, and the script is labored. There is no chemistry between the actors.

Some fairly satisfying twists toward the end of the film cannot make up for an overly long and muddled story, cliche-riddled dialogue, and a few glaringly lazy plot holes. (Just how did Bruce Wayne get back to Gotham City from that prison pit with no money or passport?) "The Dark Knight Rises" (also a lazy title) is certainly well made, but not much better than that. Should we expect anything less from a production with such a huge budget and A-list actors? The talents of Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are wasted on this film and their characters are left with not much to do. There is also a remarkable lack of Batman in this "Batman" film. Despite what many people think, "The Dark Knight Rises" is simply standard pop movie fodder, however grandly presented. But timeless, relevant cinema this is not.

Like most trilogies they had to rush the last film to production before the actors got too long in the tooth. These movies are just a good pay day for the actors.

I wish I could subtract $10 from the Dark Knight's box office earnings.

I had movie passes so I didn't pay anything. Which is fine by me because the movie wasn't worth $13.

I was watching a few Nolan films this weekend and noticed how he likes to work with the same actors. Hardy, who play Bain, is in Inception. Along with a few others. Nolan's work on all his films is pure genius. Although, I had to wikipedia Inception. That movie needs to be seen a few times. Which,I guess,is the sign of a good movie. Hope Nolan is up to something good.
05:03 PM on 08/05/2012
Nolan isn't the first nor will he be the last director to work with actors multiple times. If Nolan is considered a genius than the bar has been set pretty low.
